The governor and two congressmen

The business of government is all about relationships. I’m lucky to have the opportunity build my relationships with Governor Parson, Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer, and Congressman Jason Smith.

Monday evening, after session and committee meetings, the Governor and First Lady, opened the Mansion for the Perfect Pairing of Missouri wines and chocolates. It was a pre-Valentine celebration and I was lucky to be able to include my wife Jan, in the activities. By the way, it shouldn’t surprise anyone but Jan has a better relationship with the Governor and First Lady than I do.

Congressman Luetkemeyer was also in town on Monday. He addressed the Republican caucus prior to session giving us some insight into the issues in Washington. The Congressman included Jan and I in a reception dinner.  I always enjoy his company.

Congress Smith made it to town on Tuesday. We re-assembled the caucus so he could offer his perspective of national politics. As the new Chairman of the Ways and Means committee, Congressman Smith is now one of the more influential members of Congress. Our time with the Congressman extended into the evening with another reception.

Wednesday the legislature was distracted by the Kansas City Chiefs celebration and parade. While many of our western legislators were gone, the visitors to the Capitol made up for their absence. It was a big day for political advocates and students from Missouri schools.

Thursday we were back in the company of the Governor. He is always a gracious host to our local sports champions. The St. Elizabeth baseball team shared their championship story in the Governor’s office. My wife Jan often helps with the tours to the whispering gallery and the top of the dome, the chambers to the House and Senate, offices of the Lieutenant Governor’s and Secretary of State’s offices’, and the Thomas Hart Benton Lounge.

While seemingly social in nature, these visits with the Governor and Congressmen have the potential to yield dividends in the future.
