The world isn’t waiting

To the Editor:

Dennis Warden is openly offended that we in the Gasconade County Democrats Committee consistently attack his climate change columns for  slanted reporting.

“Like clockwork,” he complains.

We take that as a compliment to our dedication to an issue that should concern us all. Unless Dennis has a special filter on his news sources he’s undoubtedly heard about serious weather abnormalities all over the world, droughts that lay to waste great swaths of land in some areas while storms bull across others sweeping away soil,  property and lives.

The devastation is widespread, persistent…and it was predicted.

Scientists are uniform in their assessment of the threat we pose to ourselves by failing to reduce carbon dioxide emissions released into our environment.

Our plants and animals already have a combined biodiversity loss that makes users of the phrase “canary in the coal mine” blush from the understatement.  Meanwhile, Dennis tosses around the pejorative “alarmist” as though it’s inappropriate and simply not cool looking for a savvy person’s image.

We should all be alarmists!

We’re talking about ruining our one and only planet and yet trying to posture as though getting around to the matter at our convenience is a sign of being in control.

Instead of taking in the big picture of currently profiting industries and fossil fuel providers propagandizing by hiring politicians as lobbyists through their “campaign contributions,” Dennis prefers to focus on personal resentments aimed at prominent Democrats.

He, for instance, exposes Leonardo Dicaprio for “loving his private yacht, which emits as much carbon dioxide sailing seven miles as an average car does in a year.”

Well, yes, that would be grossly hypocritical, but Leo doesn’t own a yacht or even rent one. He was spotted a year ago at a party on someone else’s boat that laid offshore and moved about a mile a day when it did move (firstcuriousity.com Jan 1, 2022).

It’s funny how wanting too much to justify your biases can affect a person’s interpretation of reality.

Show us where we’re wrong, because we’d like to relate to you as the decent man we actually believe you are.
