There’s no crying in baseball

If anyone can guess the movie the above headline is said in, you know your baseball movies.

After focusing on influential football coaches the last two weeks, this week’s installment of ‘Will’ful Thinking will look at favorite baseball movies of past and present Owensville Dutchmen baseball coaches.

First up is Tyler Ahring who is the current occupant of the third base coaches box at Owensville High School.

Ahring chose to go with the classic movie Field of Dreams.

“Field of Dreams is my all time favorite baseball movie,” Ahring said. “I remember watching it as a kid and being fascinated by the idea of building your own baseball field. That became a dream of mine as a kid. Maybe someday if I live on a farm or have some land, that will be a project for me.”

Also according to Ahring, “it was also my introduction to Shoeless Joe Jackson and his story.

Former Dutchmen skipper Casey Fisher chose The Sandlot which recently celebrated its’ 25th anniversary.

“Mine has got to be The Sandlot,” Fisher said. “It was released while I was in high school and just spoke to me as a baseball player. It reminded me of my younger days when me and my friends were always outside playing baseball or getting into mischief.”

Another former Dutchmen head baseball coach in Kevin Lay also chimed in with his favorite, or in this case, favorites.

Lay’s first choice for his favorite baseball movie was The Natural.

“I have always enjoyed The Natural because of the perfect balance between the cinematography and music,” Lay said. “This movie is a testament to perseverance and passion for something that someone loves so much, and I think that passion and perseverance can be applied to so many other paths in anyone’s life.”

Lay’s second choice for favorite baseball move was A League of Their Own.

“I really like how the movie focused on how the history of something so special was mocked  at first, developed and ultimately respected in the end,” Lay said.
