Once this week’s edition of the Gasconade County Republican has hit area businesses and mailboxes this morning (Wednesday), yours truly will embark on a journey that will encompass four basketball games in three gyms throughout Gasconade, Osage and Franklin counties.
My three-gym circus will begin right after the noon hour at Owensville High School with the annual daytime doubleheader between the Owensville Middle School (OMS) Dutchmen and St. James Middle School Tigers.
Seventh-grade action will kick the twin bill off at 12:30 p.m., between the Tigers and Dutchmen with eighth-grade action to tip off at approximately 1:45 p.m.
This game will also be played in front of the entire OMS student body who will be seated on one side of the gymnasium while fans and players will be seated on the other side.
Shortly after the conclusion of that doubleheader, my second gym and third game of the day will take place in the Legends Bank Holiday Classic at Linn High School.
It will feature boys consolation semifinal action between the host Wildcats and Belle Tigers in a Highway 89 showdown at 4 p.m. today (Wednesday).
Having already played each other once prior to the Thanksgiving Day holiday, Belle will look to go to 2-0 against the Wildcats and 3-0 against Highway 89 opponents if one factors in their 59-37 victory last Thursday on the road against Chamois’ Pirates.
Capping my journey through three area gyms will be championship semifinal action tonight (Wednesday) at 8:30 p.m., pitting John VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchgirls against the St. Pius X (Festus) Lady Lancers in the Peoples Bank Holiday Classic (PBHC) at Sullivan High School.
Monday night, VanLeer’s Dutchgirls played suffocating defense against Salem’s Lady Tigers on their way to a 58-10 victory which set a new PBHC record for fewest points allowed in one game.
11 points was the previous record when Sullivan’s Lady Eagles held University City’s Lady Lions to that number of points back during the first year of the tournament in 2012.
Owensville has themselves in prime position to break the PBHC record for fewest points allowed in a tournament is currently 72 points by St. James’ Lady Tigers back in 2019.
