TWM Structural Engineer on Thursday assessed two local Rock Island corridor bridges on the proposed Rock Island Trail.
Adam Rutz with TWM Structural Engineer out of Waterloo, Ill., said he and his associate arrived at the Old Highway 50 bridge crossing outside of Gerald around 8:15 a.m. to determine the condition of that bridge.
“Right now we are pretty much kind of measuring things and taking photos,” Rutz said. “We are measuring it up so we know what’s here.”
Rutz estimated the bridge would take them most of the first half of the day.
“Hopefully we will get them all done today,” Rutz said. “It takes a while for us to measure everything.”
Missouri Rock Island Trail Inc. (MoRIT) group was awarded a $20,000 Dopplet Grant to assess the structure and stability of the train bridges on Highway 50 and a second located off of Highway 28 that crosses Soap Creek. Engineers arrived at Soap Creek around 1:15 p.m. to assess the structure.
According to Rutz, they mainly measured length, span, timber size, and other parts of the structure.
“Once you know how big everything is you can determine more,” Rutz explained. “There is no existing plans for them, so we are just trying to get an idea of what’s here.”
Rutz said their measurements would be important for future plans for the bridge, determining the best way to turn it into a crossing for a walking and biking trail.
