Two fatal accidents involve locals

The first of two fatal accidents in the area occurred Wednesday, March 30, at 9:32 p.m. 

A 17-year-old male was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Impala eastbound on U.S. Highway 50 at St. Jordans Road. The juvenile lost control and entered the path of a westbound 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Vickie A. Dement, 59, of Gerald. 

The Jeep struck the right side of the Impala. 

The juvenile, who was using a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:43 p.m. by Union ambulance personnel. His body was transported to the St. Louis County morgue. 

Dement was transported to Mercy St. Louis with serious injuries. She was not using a seat belt. 

Both vehicles were towed from the scene, the Impala was totaled, the Jeep had extensive damage.

Details of the accident were provided by a report filed by Cpl. M. Hedlund.

The second accident was reported by Tpr. J. Langley also with Troop C of the MSHP. 

On Monday, April 4, at 3:25 p.m. Dustin M. Horina, 34, of Leslie was traveling westbound on Bald Hill Road, just off Route C. The 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo traveled off the right side of the road, Horina overcorrected to the left then the right. He was ejected as the Jeep overturned. 

Horina, who was not using a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by Gerald EMS personnel at 3:50 p.m. His body was also transported to the St. Louis County morgue. 

The Jeep had extensive damage and was towed from the scene.
