VanLeer’s Dutchmen salvage seventh place

End the week on a winning note.

That was the goal Friday afternoon for Cullen VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchmen entering the seventh-place game of the 34th Owensville Tournament against the St. Louis JV Blue Knights.

Nursing an 8-7 lead at the 4:05 mark of the first quarter, the orange and black went on a 20-2 first-half run to pull away for an eventual 72-49 victory.

Leading 19-9 after one quarter, VanLeer’s Dutchmen grew their lead to 44-18 by halftime behind 11 first-half points each from seniors Will Lauth and Bryce Payne.

Ahead by as much as 32 at 55-23 midway through the third quarter, Owensville was able to empty their bench in the second half allowing all 14 uniformed Dutchmen playing time Friday afternoon.

Payne led three Dutchmen in double figures just missing a triple double with 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. He also blocked two shots.

Lauth added 16 points and four steals while Layne Evans rounded out the trio of Dutchmen double digit scorers with 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Landon Ely nearly made it four Dutchmen in double figures against the JV Blue Knights scoring eight of his nine points in the first half.

Charlie Whelan chipped in six points followed by four first-quarter points from Eli Graham.

Rounding out the Dutchmen scoring against the JV Blue Knights with two points each were J.J. Brown, Noah Caldwell and Derrick Marquez.

Falling 63-56 Thursday in the consolation semifinals against the STL Varsity Blue Knights, Evans Owensville with 18 points followed by Charles Hazelwood hitting five second-half 3-pointers off the bench for 15 points.

Payne added a double double of 11 points and 12 rebounds while Lauth made it a quartet of Dutchmen double digit scorers with 10 points.

Suffering a 59-50 first-round setback against Union last Monday night, Evans led OHS with 16 points and seven rebounds followed closely by Lauth with 15 points.

Payne pulled down 10 rebounds and added six points.
