Seeing both the freshman and junior varsity Dutchmen go down to Fatima last Tuesday night, Cullen VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchmen varsity basketball team looked to thwart a bid for a tripleheader sweep by the Comets in the night cap at Owensville High School (OHS).
Trailing 52-49 with 1:53 remaining on a Max Stuecken 3-pointer, Dutchmen senior Eli Graham tied the game at 52-52 on an old-fashioned 3-point play with 1:31 to go in regulation.
Dutchmen sophomore guard Keigan Glaser then sent OHS into a frenzy after scoring on a drive to the basket with :05 left giving the orange and black a 54-52 lead.
A Brandon Graham free throw and two more Glaser free throws in the final two seconds of the game helped the Dutchmen post their first win over Fatima since 2009 following a 57-55 victory last Tuesday night.
“Our guys kept fighting until we were able to secure the win with enough free throws down the stretch,” VanLeer said. “That was a very good Fatima team we were fortunate to get a win against tonight.”
Glaser led three Dutchmen in double figures with 17 points and three assists.
Chase Crosby followed with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists while Jansen Loeb canned four 3-point shots giving him 12 points for the game to go along with a team-high four steals.
Eli Graham added six points and three rebounds followed closely by Brady Watson with four points and four rebounds and four assists.
Brandon Graham and Zaiden Gates each rounded out the Dutchmen scoring against Fatima with two points.
Gates also pulled down six rebounds.
Xavier Stuecken led the Comets with 19 points while Matthew Robertson added 18 points, five assists and four rebounds.
JV action saw Owensville survive 16 lead changes and four ties in the first half going into halftime trailing Fatima’s JV Comets by just one point at 26-25.
Tied at 30-30 on a pair of Broden Kelley free throws with 4:19 for the third quarter, Owensville saw Fatima end the quarter on a 13-1 run leaving the JV Dutchmen in a 43-31 hole after three quarters.
Down 53-44 with 1:38 left, 3-point shots from Bryce Kramme and Kylen Menz cut the Dutchmen deficit to three at 53-50 with 39.2 remaining.
Unable to get any closer, the orange and black ended up on the short end of a 54-50 final score.
Koen Brooks and Menz each led the Dutchmen with 14 points while Logan Valley and Kramme both chipped in seven points apiece.
Brooks also pulled down eight rebounds to nearly finish with a double double.
Kramme added nine rebounds and three steals to his seven points.
Henry Womack and Kelley each added three points followed closely with two points from Lex Moseler.
Cash Mengwasser led the JV Comets with a double double of 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Tanner Huhn nearly added a double double of his own for Fatima racking up 10 points and eight rebounds.
Trailing 22-13 at halftime, Owensville’s freshman Dutchmen were outscored 18-10 in the third quarter before an 8-2 fourth-quarter rally came up short with a 42-31 final score.
Tucker Sassmann led the orange and black with 11 points to go along with six points from Brogan Clancy.
Braden Perkins and Wyatt Bone each added four points while Charlie Katsov and Tyler Menz rounded out the freshman Dutchmen scoring against Fatima with three points apiece.
Tyler Menz also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds while Bone and Katsov both grabbed nine boards apiece.
Toby Luebbert led Fatima’s freshman Comets with 14 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Trent Stuckenschnieder just missed making it two Comets in double figures scoring all nine of his points in the first half.
