Washington Middle School student dies from COVID-19, the youngest victim in the state

An eighth-grade student at Washington Middle School, Peyton Baumgarth, died over the weekend from COVID-19. So did a Gerald man. The county reported an additional five deaths across the county in the last seven days, but neither of the above referenced deaths were included in that count.

Baumgarth, 13, is so far the youngest person in Missouri to succumb to the virus.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of God’s greatest gifts, a child,” said Presiding Commissioner Tim Brinker. “Prayers for the family and all of those impacted by the tragic loss. I urge everyone to do their part to prevent the spread of the virus.” Brinker reminds everyone to wear a mask, keep a safe distance from others when you do not have a mask, keep your hands clean and away from your face.

“Peyton’s passing is the absolute, the finite reminding reason for us all to do our part, and we should not let his passing be anything less than an urgent sign to do what we need to do every day,” Brinker concluded.

Brinker has staunchly refused to consider a mask mandate for Franklin County.

The county’s death toll from COVID-19 is currently at 49 residents and climbing.

307 new cases were reported across the county this week, six of those were from Gerald. There are currently seven active cases in the Gerald area.

There are 30 active cases lumped under the heading Gerald Leslie Beaufort. That heading now also inexplicably includes Rosebud. A 29-year-old woman from Rosebud was removed from the county totals last week which could attribute to the confusion.

Leslie has 12 active cases while Beaufort has 10. A 23-year-old male under the heading has never been affiliated with a town.

The cases in Gerald include three males ages 73, 54 and 16 and four females ages 65, 62, 29 and 16.

The county saw a record high of 70 positive new cases reported Saturday, Oct. 31.

There were also a record number of positive cases, 101, in long-term care facilities. At press time, that number had been reduced to 80.

14 positive cases are currently hospitalized within the county.
