After seeing their freshmen and junior varsity drop their matches Thursday night, Jamie Ridenhour’s varsity Dutchgirl volleyball team look to dash Fatima’s bid for a clean sweep of all three matches.
What unfolded in the varsity match will be talked about for a long time to come.
Dropping the first two sets 25-21 and 25-20, Owensville stormed back to win the next three sets and the match by scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 15-7.
In the deciding fifth set, it was all about serving and mistake-free volleyball.
Falling behind 3-1 on errors, Ridenhour’s Dutchgirls benefited from a pair of Fatima errors to tie the set at 3-3.
However, trailing 6-3, Ridenhour called a timeout and that turned the momentum around to Owensville’s side.
A Dutchgirl kill made it 6-4 sending senior Emily McKinney to the service line.
Scoring the next seven points, McKinney accomplished two things.
Not only did she give the Dutchgirls an 11-6 lead, she made Fatima use both of their allotted timeouts in the fifth set.
“I didn’t realize I had made Fatima use both of their timeouts,” McKinney said. “I just kept serving and they were inbounds.”
McKinney led the Dutchgirls with 12 kills and four aces against the Lady Comets.
Grace McFalls also amassed double-digit kills with 10.
Haley Coello and Kyla Hendrix also finished with nine kills each.
Coello was also a wall at the net leading the Dutchgirls with five blocks.
Sophomore Josie Gerlemann added three blocks to go along with two each from Kylie Kitchen, McFalls, Kyla Hendrix and McKinney.
Owensville also had three in double figures in digs led by McFalls with 32. Cadi Ruth followed closely behind with 27 digs and McKinney added 21.
In the assist department, Kyla Hendrix dished out 22 of them while senior Taylor McClure also recorded 14 assists.
Following their match with Sullivan tomorrow (Thursday) night at home with district and conference implications, Ridenhour’s Dutchgirls will compete next week in the 65th Annual Hermann Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
They will compete in Pool A on Monday, Sept. 28 against New Haven and Borgia at 6 p.m., and 7 p.m., respectively at Hermann High School.
