Winter wrap up

For Owensville Dutchmen and Dutchgirl basketball, they were hoping that the last day of February would not mark the final day of their respective seasons.

Unable to overcome low-scoring first halves, both teams coached by Todd Rehmert and Ryan Flanagan respectively saw their seasons end in the first round of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 4, District 9 basketball tournament at Union High School.

Flanagan’s Dutchgirls will have one factor in their favor next winter.

With no seniors on the roster this year, they will have at least three in post player Anna Skornia, guard Kate Angell and forward Katelyn Landolt.

Landolt missed the final month and a half of her junior campaign with a season-ending knee injury during the Comet Classic at Fatima High School in Westphalia.

“We don’t lose anybody,” Flanagan said. “Everyone will be back and I feel like we have some incoming freshman that could help us immediately next winter.”

In Rehmert’s case, he loses four seniors in Cason Gray, Daxton Mehrhoff, Justin Garner, Trevor Abernathy and Boyde Nicks.

In spite of their coming graduation, juniors coming back for their senior season will include Zaid Epstein, Macen Blankenship, Tyler Heidbrink, Austin Terry and Bryor Bogle.

Rod Barndollar’s Owensville wrestlers will see Haven Sanders as the lone experienced returner for the Dutchgirls with Dutchmen grapplers Michael Martin, Dakota Martin, Zach Adams, Alan Kopp, Alex Pack and Gabe Soest returning with varsity experience.
