Five days removed from a road victory at Linn, Hannah Koppelmann’s Owensville Dutchgirl softball team looked for their second win in as many games.

Hosting Union’s Lady Wildcats last Tuesday night in the Four Rivers Conference (FRC) opener for both teams, Owensville also honored their six senior players on senior night following their 9-1 victory.

Union started the game in the top of the first inning turning an error into a run and a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Dutchgirls got that run back and then some.

Freshman Emma Daniels led off with a walk before senior catcher Halie Boyer drove her in with a RBI double tying the game at 1-1.

Trading places with Boyer, Finley delivered an RBI double giving Owensville a 2-1 lead with no outs in the inning.

Another senior got in on the first-inning action.

Paige Bossaller drove Finley in with a RBI single pushing the OHS lead to 3-1 after one inning of senior-night softball.

Settling down after the first-inning run, junior south paw Addison Wright retired the next eight Union batters before a two-out walk in the top of the fourth inning.

Following a scoreless second inning, Owensville added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning against Union.

Finley singled to lead off the inning before Wright helped her own cause with a RBI double giving the Dutchgirls a 4-1 lead.

Two batters later, senior Kaitlin Nelson drove in Wright with a RBI single pushing the Owensville lead to 5-1 through three innings of FRC softball.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Koppelmann’s Dutchgirl offense went back to work in the bottom of the fifth inning.

This time, a two-out rally was in the cards for the Dutchgirls.

Paige Loyd walked to start the rally before senior Gabby Bunners delivered a RBI double driving in Loyd for a 6-1 Dutchgirl lead. Bunners scored on a Daniels RBI single

Alyssa Belloir joined the two-out rally with a walk before scoring on a Boyer RBI single.

After Finley was hit by a pitch, Wright drove in Daniels with a RBI single giving Owensville their final margin of victory when the game was called after six innings due to the threat of severe weather moving into the area last Tuesday night.

Two nights later, the Dutchgirls looked to go to 2-0 in conference play Thursday afternoon on the road in Sullivan against the Lady Eagles.

Tied at 3-3 after three innings, Owensville could not overcome multiple errors and a pair of late-inning home runs before falling 12-4 on the road in Sullivan.

Early on, the Dutchgirls were able to score first.

With two outs in the top of the first, Finley doubled before Wright blasted a two-run home run over the center-field fence for a 2-0 Dutchgirl lead.

Sullivan answered with two runs on two hits and an error to tie the game at 2-2 after one inning.

OHS retook the lead in the top of the third inning Boyer single and scored on a Sullivan error giving the Dutchgirls a 3-2 lead moving to the bottom of the third inning.

From there, Sullivan scored nine unanswered runs to hand the Dutchgirls their first loss in conference play.

Boyer did walk and score in the top of the seventh on a Wright RBI single.

Over the weekend on Saturday, Owensville played a pair of games in Vienna against the host Eagles and Tuscumbia’s Lady Lions.

In game one against Tuscumbia, Bunners tossed a one-hit shutout helping the Dutchgirls to a 12-0 victory in five innings.

Bunners also only allowed one walk to go with four strikeouts.

Wright helped Bunners with four RBIs including three of them on a bases-clearing triple to end the game.

In a well-played second game, Owensville had to go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the seventh before falling to the host Vienna Eagles by a score of 3-1.
