VIENNA — Nearly coming back from a 9-1 deficit against Linn Saturday afternoon at Vienna City Park before falling 9-8 to the Wildcats, Steven Kemp’s Owensville Dutchmen baseball team looked to split the twin bill with a victory against the host Vienna Eagles.

Tied at 1-1 after an inning, Owensville’s bats came to life with a seven-run bottom of the second and a six-run bottom of the third helping them to a 14-1 victory in five innings.

After two hits led to Vienna’s lone run of the game in the top of the first inning, Owensville had a quick answer in the bottom half of the first.

Zaiden Gates walked with one out before stealing second and third base.

He then scored on a throwing error before an inning-ending double play was completed knotting the game at 1-1.

Working around two walks in the top of the second inning, Dutchmen starting pitcher Chase Weirich kept Vienna off the board and gave his offense a chance to give him a lead in the bottom half of the second.

Helping his own cause, Weirich led the frame off with a walk before being replaced on the base paths by courtesy runner Adam Wilson.

Following a Logan Bailey walk, Jaden Gerlemann singled to left field which led to Wilson scoring on an error giving OHS their first lead of the game.

Jansen Loeb walked to load the bases for senior Layne Evans hitting out of the ninth spot in the batting order.

Staring at an 0-2 count, Evans tomahawked one into left field for a bases-clearing double bumping the Dutchmen lead to 5-1.

Landon Ely and Zaiden Gates followed with back-to-back RBI singles before a Landon Kramme RBI sacrifice fly capped Owensville’s seven-run bottom of the second inning.

Pitching around back-to-back singles in the top of the third inning, Weirich got out of the jam allowing the orange and black a chance to add to their lead.

Bailey led the bottom of the third off with a walk before scoring on a two-RBI double off the bat of Evans.

That double gave Evans five hits on the day more than equaling his hit total from all of last season with four.

Gates followed with a two-RBI double later in the inning before Kramme’s second RBI sacrifice fly of the game gave Owensville a 14-1 lead after three innings.

Evans led the Dutchmen offense with two hits, two runs scored and a team-high five runs batted in (RBI).

Gates and Bailey also had two hits with Gates driving in three runs and crossing the plate three times as well.

Needing just 72 pitches to earn the complete-game win, Weirich allowed an unearned run on five hits to go with two walks and six strikeouts.

Earlier in the day, catcher Chris Allen had a game he will never forget.

Blasting solo home runs in the top of the third and sixth innings, the Dutchmen catcher hit his first two career high school home runs in Owensville’s 9-8 loss to Linn.

After Allen’s first home run in the third inning, Owensville turned six hits into five runs in the top of the fifth inning highlighted by a pinch-hit two-RBI double from Bailey.

Following Allen’s second solo home run in the top of the sixth inning, Bailey collected his third RBI of the game on a single scoring Evans after he doubled for his third hit against the Wildcats.

Wilson took the loss for Linn going two innings allowing four runs on one hit with five walks and three strikeouts.

Owensville had their scheduled home game with Union last night (Tuesday) moved to Union High School due to wet outfield conditions at OHS Field.
