Standoff near Rosebud leads to kidnapping, weapons charges

ROSEBUD — A man from Rosebud faces five felony charges, including three counts of second-degree kidnapping, after his arrest following a standoff early Sunday morning.

According to information obtained through a probable cause affidavit and a Facebook post by Gasconade County Sheriff Scott Eiler, law enforcement was dispatched to the 2800 block of County Line Road at 12:12 a.m. following a report of domestic assault in progress involving a firearm. The report alleged that Matthew S. Gerlemann was armed with four pistols and there were concerns that he would shoot law enforcement. Gerlemann’s wife made the call and reported that she was hiding in a locked bathroom and unable to leave the residence with her two children younger than 5 years old.

When law enforcement arrived on the scene, they observed Gerlemann in the kitchen. Law enforcement gave him instructions to exit the residence, but he did not follow. Law enforcement attempted to negotiate with Gerlemann over the phone. The affidavit alleges that Gerlemann told law enforcement that he had a pistol and “if law enforcement came in it would be bad.” A standoff began with Gerlemann refusing to exit the house. Eventually, a trained negotiator talked Gerlemann into surrendering.

According to the affidavit, Gerlemann’s wife alleged that he had fired shots at their dog, they were arguing and he made statements about shooting her. She also told law enforcement that she could not leave with the children because she feared what Gerlemann might do if she tried.

The affidavit requested an arrest warrant. Gasconade County Prosecuting Attorney Mary Weston signed a warrant alleging five criminal charges against Gerlemann. He faces one second-degree class D felony kidnapping charge, two additional second-degree class D felony kidnapping charges of juveniles younger than 14 years old, one count of the class E felony unlawful use of a weapon and one count of the unclassified felony of armed criminal action.

Gerlemann remains in custody on a $100,000 cash-only bond. His arraignment was set for 9 a.m. this morning (Wednesday) in Gasconade County Associate Circuit Court.

In the Facebook post, Eiler thanked the Owensville Police Department, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol for their assistance.
