Freshmen Dutchmen split back to back home games

Falling 7-1 last Wednesday against St. Francis Borgia’s Knights, Brady Smith’s Owensville Dutchmen freshmen baseball team looked to bounce back the next afternoon against Waynesville’s Tigers in home diamond action at OHS Field.

Leading 12-0 after three innings, OHS survived an late Tiger rally before holding on for a 14-8 victory giving them their first notch in the win column.

Pitching around an error in the top of the first inning, Dutchmen starting pitcher Wyatt Shaw retired the next three Waynesville batters giving his offense a chance to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the first inning.

Leyton Hoemeyer and Liam Rasmussen drew one-out walks before Cael Walker reached on catcher’s interference to load the bases.

Shaw helped his own cause with two outs drawing a bases-loaded walk to break the scoreless tie.

After Rasmussen and Walker scored on an error, Corbin Brand singled to place runners at the corners with two outs.

Broden Kelley walked and scored before a Colton Echols delivered the big blow of Owensville’s eight-run bottom of the first inning with a two-RBI double.

Following a scoreless second inning, the orange and black added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Grant Huebler singled and scored when Walker hit a two-RBI single to center field pushing the Dutchmen lead into double digits at 10-0 with one out.

Chris Kroon capped the Dutchmen scoring in the bottom of the third inning with a two-RBI double plating Hoemeyer and Walker for a 12-0 lead.

Waynesville turned three hits, three walks and a hit batter into five runs in the top of the fourth inning reducing Owensville’s lead to 12-5 heading into the bottom half of the fourth.

Huebler and Rasmussen both singled and scored in the bottom of the fourth bumping the Dutchmen lead back up to 14-5 after four innings.

Leading the Dutchmen with a game-high three hits, Huebler was joined in the multi-hit department with two each from Hoemeyer, Walker and Brand.

Shaw earned the win pitching two and two-thirds of an inning allowing no runs on just one hit and one walk to go with six strikeouts.

During their loss to Borgia, Shaw drove in Rasmussen with a RBI ground out in the bottom of the second inning.

Owensville’s freshmen will return to action today (Wednesday) hosting Cuba’s Wildcats at OHS Field with a 4:30 p.m., first pitch.
