A nation in turmoil — but we ain’t seen nothin’ yet

To the Editor:

From my perspective our nations growing list of woes can best be attributed to an absence of leadership. For example:

As a candidate, Joe Biden forever touted that transparency would be the guiding principle in his administration. Now, as the White House back peddles on their error in judgment and tries desperately to put a positive spin on a runaway scandal, President Biden is six or seven days into his refusal to answer any question on the matter. It’s tough to be transparent when you’re mute. Confidential files being stored in non-secured locations became known on Nov. 2nd (before the mid-term election), but that fact wasn’t even acknowledged by the White House until CBS News reported the problem and forced their hand. So much for transparency. Hell, I doubt if the shuffling and feeble Joe Biden has the cognizance to spell transparency, let alone practice it.

And the George Santos story gets more bizarre with each passing day. To say the man is a pathological liar is a gross understatement. Even Donald Trump, who never let the facts dictate his narrative, takes a back seat to this New York nut case. Santos’ penchant for lying would see him booted from any job I can think of. Except, of course, U.S. Representative. How can that be? New Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, has yet to join his Republican brethren calling for Santos to resign. In fact, McCarthy says Santos is on track for committee assignments. You call that leadership? I call it frightening, especially since McCarthy is second in line to succeed the President.

President Biden and Speaker McCarthy fail miserably when it comes to leadership. And the scariest part? It’s only going to get worse. If you have children and grandchildren you best sit them down and forewarn them that for at least the next two or three decades we all will be facing never before seen hardships. Hardships brought about by a bunch of self-serving do-nothings calling the shots that affect our daily lives. Since no one in the nation’s capital is willing to take on the role of the adult in the room, we’ll continue to have the find of partisan gridlock that results in slanted decisions that are strong on principle but myopic on common sense and reality.

Get ready for world-wide economic upheaval. Couple that with a cornered and desperate Vladimir Putin willing to do anything other than admit defeat and you’ve got problems the likes of which the world has never seen. At my age I can accept these consequences, but I seriously doubt those born after 1970 can. Get ready folks, because things are about to get ugly. They say forewarned is forearmed, but is that enough? I doubt it.

Sincerely,

Patrick J. Leslie
