All-Tournament Team honors for Watson at Borgia

WASHINGTON — Minus two starters last week during the 73rd St. Francis Borgia Turkey Tournament, Cullen VanLeer’s Owensville Dutchmen basketball team was able to find a lot out about themselves early in the season.

“While we may have been missing two starters, some of our guys may have found themselves roles for later in the season when we get healthy,” VanLeer said.

Following Owensville’s 53-46 loss to Washington in the seventh-place game Saturday afternoon, junior guard Brady Watson was named to the All-Tournament Team at Borgia.

“Brady was the team MVP (Most Valuable Player) this week during the tournament,” VanLeer said. “He had three solid games and he will continue to help us when we get (Chase) Crosby back from his ankle injury.”

Falling 66-19 last Tuesday night to eventual tournament champion McCluer North, the Dutchmen were led by Keigan Glaser and Brady Watson with seven points apiece while Logan Valley and Wyatt Lewis each added two points.

Bryce Kramme rounded out the Owensville scoring against McCluer North with one point on a first-quarter free throw.

Glaser also added nine rebounds and three assists to his seven points while Watson also pulled down six rebounds.

Black Friday basketball last week meant a consolation semifinal showdown with Union’s Wildcats now coached by former Dutchgirl head basketball coach John VanLeer.

In a battle between father and son, Cullen’s Dutchmen held the lead for most of the first half before Union ended the second quarter on a 10-2 run leaving Owensville facing a 25-20 halftime deficit.

Owensville was able to get back within one twice in the second half on a Valley bucket at the 1:16 mark of the third quarter and a Lewis 3-pointer with 3:00 remaining.

Falling 41-38 when Glaser’s 3-point shot at the end of regulation missed the mark, the Dutchmen were led by Watson and Glaser scoring 12 points apiece.

Watson nearly finished with a double double grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out a team-high three assists.

Cameron Servais led John VanLeer’s Wildcats with a game-high 17 points.

“We knew what we were getting with Owensville,” John VanLeer said. “They had us down most of the first half and we were fortunate to get out with a win in spite of the numerous turnovers we had.”

In Saturday’s seventh-place game against Washington, Owensville led 20-13 at the 3:50 mark of the second quarter on a Kramme 3-pointer before the Blue Jays ended the half on a 10-3 run knotting the game in a 23-23 halftime tie.

Falling behind 32-25 with 5:30 for the third quarter, VanLeer’s Dutchmen got two free throws from Lewis and a Watson basket trimming their deficit to three at 32-29 at the 3:40 mark of the third quarter.

That was as close as Owensville would get the rest of the way of their 53-46 loss.

Watson showed the way for the Dutchmen with 15 points, four blocked shots, three rebounds and three assists.

Glaser also reached double figures with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Lewis just missed making it a trio of Dutchmen in double digits netting seven of his nine points in the second half.

Kramme added six points on a pair of made 3-pointers while Valley rounded out the orange and black scoring with five points.

Weather and road conditions permitting, Owensville is scheduled to return to action Friday afternoon against Linn’s Wildcats at 3:30 p.m., inside Mizzou Arena as part of the Norm Stewart Classic.
