They say that April showers bring May flowers.
Those same April showers can bring scheduling headaches for area athletic directors.
Thanks to heavy rainfall taking place throughout the area last Wednesday, a number of area spring sports events were either postponed or rescheduled.
Steven Kemp’s Owensville Dutchmen baseball team was the first to feel the impact of Mother Nature’s first round of April showers.
Scheduled to face St. James’ Tigers last Wednesday at Nelson Hart Park in road Four Rivers Conference (FRC) baseball action, heavy rainfall left the field in St. James unplayable forcing the game to be postponed to a date that has yet to be determined at press time.
Wayland McKague’s Hermann Bearcat baseball team was next to be affected by last week’s heavy rain.
Dick Ochsner Ball Park was scheduled to host Hermann’s Bearcats taking on Van-Far’s Indians with wet field conditions postponing that contest to a later date.
Hermann was also scheduled to venture to Elsberry last weekend for a pair of Saturday baseball games against the host Indians and Bowling Green Bobcats before wet field conditions in Pike County forced those games to be canceled.
Matt Candrl’s Owensville High School (OHS) track and field team nearly lost a meet over the weekend but Washington High School (WHS) moved their annual pentathlon scheduled for Saturday, April 4 back to Good Friday as the weather forecast then projected a better chance of getting the meet in on Friday versus going ahead and attempting to hold the meet as originally scheduled on Saturday.
Over in Maries County, Bryce Gehlert’s Belle Tigers had a Highway 28 showdown with Dixon’s Bulldogs originally scheduled for last Thursday postponed due to wet field conditions at Tiger Field.
That contest had yet to be rescheduled as of press time.
Jacob Walton’s Belle High School track team lost a track meet last week due to inclement weather as the New Bloomfield Invitational was postponed due to the threat of inclement weather.
April showers could play a role later this week in the upcoming Linn Baseball Tournament.
Tiger Field at Belle City Park is scheduled to host one pool of games this Friday afternoon between the host Tigers, Hermann Bearcats and Cuba Wildcats.
As long as Mother Nature allows baseball to be played Friday, Linn Tournament pool games at Tiger Field are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., with Belle taking on Cuba followed at high noon by a Highway 19 cat fight between Cuba’s Wildcats and Hermann’s Bearcats.
Pool play will conclude at approximately 2:30 p.m., when Belle will face Hermann.
Saturday place games for fifth, third and first will be played at Linn High School where hopefully Mother Nature will let the boys of spring do their thing.
