MOKANE — Bring home championship hardware from Mokane.

That was the mission Saturday night for Jake Witthaus’ Hermann Bearcats taking on their Highway 19 neighbors to the north in Montgomery County’s Wildcats in the championship game of the South Callaway Boys Basketball Tournament.

Taking a brief 19-18 lead on a Daeden Hopkins bucket with 2:24 until halftime, Hermann saw Montgomery County end the first half on a 5-0 run leaving the Bearcats trailing 23-18 at the half.

Pulling within two points at 45-43 on a Nolan Brune 3-pointer with 55.1 left in the game, Hermann could not get any closer before settling for second-place hardware at South Callaway following a 47-43 loss to Montgomery County in the tournament title game.

Brune led the Bearcats and all scorers with 17 points and three assists.

Easton Stiers nearly joined in Brune in double digits finishing with nine points all on 3-pointers for Hermann.

Coulter Schwartze added eight points and six rebounds while Hopkins ended up with four points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots.

John Hiatt also chipped in five points and pulled down four rebounds.

Hopkins (First Team) and Schwartze (Second Team) were both named to the South Callaway All-Tournament Team for Witthaus’ Bearcats.

Tyler Erwin and Isaiah Thomas each led Montgomery County with 11 points.

In semifinal action Thursday against Eldon’s Mustangs from South Callaway, Hermann led 44-35 after three quarters before outscoring the Mustangs 21-8 in the fourth quarter of their 65-43 victory.

Schwartze led four Bearcats in double figures with 19 points and eight rebounds while Brune added 16 points and five assists.

Hiatt 12 points, four rebounds and four assists while Hopkins posted a double double of 12 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Hunter Hees led Eldon with a game-high 23 points.

Last Wednesday in their South Callaway tournament opener against New Bloomfield, Hermann led 10-6 after one quarter before outscoring the Wildcats 50-18 during the remainder of their 60-24 victory.

Hitting seven 3-pointers and converting an old-fashioned 3-point play, Stiers finished with a game-high 24 points.

Hopkins added a double double of 15 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Schwartze added six points and eight rebounds to go along with six points from Hiatt.

Kohlt Witthaus added four fourth-quarter points followed by three from Brune and two from Kruz Eldringhoff.

Jake Fuhriman led New Bloomfield with 16 points.
