Bearcats sweep Highway 19 hoops twin bill from Cuba

HERMANN — Dropping a hard-fought 51-48 road decision nearly two weeks ago at Southern Boone, Jake Witthaus’ Hermann Bearcats looked for an early Christmas present Thursday night in the form a victory over Highway 19 foe Cuba.

Leading 33-23 after three quarters, Hermann pulled away from the visiting Wildcats outscoring the 19-10 in the fourth quarter of their 52-33 home victory.

Taking a 15-7 lead after eight minutes, Easton Stiers hit a pair of 3-pointers to led the Bearcats in the first quarter.

Edging Cuba 8-5 to conclude the first half, Hermann took a 23-12 halftime lead behind six first-half points apiece from Stiers and John Hiatt.

Held to four points in the first half, Bearcat post player Daeden Hopkins ended up with a double double of 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the blue and white.

Hiatt added six points in each half giving him 12 for the game followed closely by 11 points, four assists and three steals from Nolan Brune.

Nearly making it four Bearcats in double figures, Stiers finished with nine points on three shots from beyond the arc.

Coulter Schwartze rounded out the scoring for Hermann with six points while sharing team-high assists honors with four along with Brune.

Preston Heads led Cuba scoring eight of his team-high 11 points in the second half.

Braden Gipson also reached double figures for the Wildcats with 10 points.

Drew Lansford’s JV Bearcats broke an 18-18 halftime tie outscoring Cuba 29-9 during the second half of their 47-27 victory.

Ryker Ash led the JV Bearcats scoring 10 of his game-high 13 points in the second half.

Kohlt Witthaus also reached double figures with 11 points for Hermann.

Myles Stiers and Kruz Eldringhoff each added eight points while Aiden Eikermann rounded out the JV Bearcat scoring with seven points.

Hermann will close out 2023 Friday night on the road in Mokane against South Callaway’s Bulldogs with a 6 p.m., start time for junior-varsity action.

After a road contest at South Callaway to close 2023, Hermann’s Bearcats will open 2024 on Tuesday, Jan. 2 with a Highway 100 road hardwood showdown against Washington’s Blue Jays with a 5:30 p.m., tip time for junior-varsity action.
