Ryan C. Madonna, 41, Beaufort, has been charged with burglary first degree, property damage first degree, and assault fourth degree.
According to Franklin County Sheriff Steve Pelton, the charges stem from a call his office received Oct. 15 in the early evening.
The call indicated a burglary in progress, but while deputies were en route it was reported the reporting party had fired a shot with a pistol as the alleged burglar approached him in an aggressive manner with a shovel.
The alleged victim said the suspect was beating on his door and when he opened it the suspect started to confront him about urinating in his yard. The suspect then entered the residence and began to assault the victim who was able to push him back out the door.
Once outside, the suspect grabbed a shovel and started beating on the door until he broke through it. The suspect then started swinging the shovel at the victim, who was able to retrieve a firearm and shot between the suspect and door frame in an effort to get the suspect to leave.
The suspect then used the shovel to shatter the rear windshield of the victim’s vehicle.
Evidence at the scene was consistent with victim’s account of the events, according to Pelton.
The victim said he did not know the suspect and had no prior contact with him.
The suspect was placed under arrest and transported to the Franklin County Adult Detention Facility.
Madonna’s cash only bond was set at $75,000.
