BELLE — During a July 21 special meeting that was called to discuss citizen concerns and code of conduct, Mayor Daryl White Jr. asked the board to approve citizen-suggested name changes to city buildings.

“I know this was not on the agenda,” White began as he took the mayoral seat the former mayor Josh Seaver had just resigned from. “But this meeting has taken a drastic turn. We are pretty much in an emergency situation.”

In an effort to bring the city officials in those in attendance back to common ground, White suggested the remainder of the meeting be used to share information, even though they were going off script.

He asked the room at large how they would feel about re-naming the council chambers, known as City Hall. Citizens suggested they call it the Lonnie Feeler Memorial Building.

“I like that,” White said. “I think it’s a great idea.”

The board approved the new name with a 3-0 vote.

They also approved changing the Belle Administration Building to be officially named Belle City Hall.

“I like that,” White said again. “I think something good can come out of this meeting tonight.”

Citizens went further and suggested officially naming the Public Works building after a former employee, Daryl Jenkins.

“We can recognize Daryl for all his years and rename the maintenance building,” suggested Steve Vogt, former mayor.

The change was approved and plaques are to be made for each building.
