At a special meeting held Thursday, Feb. 25, the Board of Aldermen approved a rate hike in sewer rates for city residents. The flat sewer rate of $18.50 will remain unchanged. The increase will be seen in the charge per 1,000 gallons of water used rising from $4.75 to $5.28.
A public hearing preceded the special meeting. Only two people were in attendance and only one addressed the board. Otis Schulte reminded the aldermen that sewer rates are determined by the amount of water used. If residents water their lawns or gardens, the water used is reflected in the sewer rate, even though the water does not enter the sewer system.
After correcting three typographical errors in the corresponding ordinance, aldermen unanimously passed the sewer rate increase.
