Bodine, Dare end Dutchgirl wrestling seasons at state

COLUMBIA — While they may not have ended their respective seasons on the medal stand, Owensville Dutchgirl wrestlers Brianna Bodine and Rylee Dare both represented the orange and black during the 2026 Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Wrestling Championships held last Wednesday and Thursday at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

Entering the state tournament with a 37-11 record, Bodine had already broken the single-season win record for Owensville High School (OHS) girls wrestling by a freshman.

Previously held by Bailee Dare who went 34-15 as a freshman in 2022, Bodine won her 35th match during the MSHSAA Class 1, District 2 Girls Wrestling Tournament held during the first weekend of February at Mexico High School.

“I had no idea that I had won the most matches in a season by a Dutchgirl wrestling freshman,” Bodine said.  “It has been awesome to see my hard work pay off this year by qualifying for state but now I’m that much more motivated to reach the medal stand next year.”

Bodine’s state tournament at 100 pounds in MSHSAA Girls Class 1 began last Wednesday afternoon against Benton (St. Joseph) junior Nealeigh Ziolkowski in first-round action.

Taken down at the 1:46 mark of the first period, Bodine scored a one-point escape with 1:13 for the first period before scoring a 3-point take down seconds later for a 4-3 lead in the match.

Reversed with :43 for the first period, Bodine was eventually pinned in 1:39 sending her to the first round of wrestle backs later in the day.

Ziolkowski went on to place fifth in the state at 100 pounds in MSHSAA Class 1 Girls Wrestling.

Matched up against Windsor’s (Imperial) Sydnie Christopher, Bodine looked to keep her record-breaking freshman season alive.

Getting a take down :10 into the match, Bodine went on to pin Christopher in :30 moving her to the second round of wrestle backs and a win away from advancing to day two of the tournament.

Standing between Bodine and possibly having the sing the National Anthem in a wrestling singlet as a member of the Owensville High School Troubadours was Stover senior Chloe Zeller.

Battling throughout the match in spite of not being able to get on the scoreboard, Bodine saw her freshman season end after losing by fall in 4:32.

Zeller was then eliminated in the next round losing an 8-6 decision to Plattsburg’s Isabella Hofmeister.

While she may not have faced them in Columbia, Bodine was able to say that she wrestled against both the state champion and second-place wrestler in MSHSAA Class 1 Girls Wrestling at 100 pounds.

Ste. Genevieve’s Lexi Wolk and Blair Oaks’ Macie Kempker both reached the championship match last Thursday night with Wolk winning a 15-3 major decision.

Bodine lost to Wolk twice during the Lady Rebels Invitational at Central Parks Hills and in the Seckman Women’s Tournament.

She also lost to Kempker twice during the Thundering Herd Girls Tournament in Buffalo and in the MSHSAA Class 1, District 2 championship match in Mexico at 100 pounds.

Now a two-time state qualifier, Dare looked to secure her place on the Class 2 Girls medal stand at 145 beginning with first-round action against St. Clair senior Molly Brown.

Trailing 7-0 after one period, Dare managed a one-point escape before going to on lose 16-1 by technical fall sending her to the first round of wrestle backs later in the afternoon of day one last Wednesday.

Brown was eliminated in the second round of wrestle backs by Lathrop’s Gracie Rindom.

Mid-Buchanan junior Dru Pearson was Dare’s opponent in the first round of wrestle backs last Wednesday afternoon.

Scoring a take down with :20 for the first period, Dare went on to win the match by fall in 1:00 moving one win closer to advancing to day two of the tournament.

Eldon’s Lucy Holleman was the wrestler standing between Dare and a spot in day two of the state tournament last Thursday at 145 pounds.

Scoring 3-point take downs in both the first and second periods, Dare went on to win a 7-0 decision booking passage to the third round of wrestle backs and a bout with El Dorado Springs’ Haylee Esparza.

Trailing 7-0 after one period, Dare scored a 2-point reversal before eventually seeing her junior season end at 46-11 following a loss by fall in 2:55.

“Rylee had a heck of a junior season qualifying for state this year after not qualifying as a sophomore,” Howard said. “I look for Rylee to be on the medal stand next year along with Bri.”

Esparza went on to place sixth in the state in MSHSAA Class 1 Girls Wrestling at 145 pounds.
