In their regular meeting last Thursday, the Board of Aldermen reviewed an ordinance that will no longer allow parking on the sides of Flottmann Road. The new ordinance would apply to the entire length of the street from Bernhardt Avenue west to the city limits.
Big trucks are not allowed to drive on Flottmann Road, but many still use the street to access the industrial park. Residents in the area are also concerned with trucks driving north on Cedar Street and then attempting the sharp turn onto the narrow street to get to the industrial park.
Some of these residents have been parking on the street in front of their homes to block the truck traffic, according to Police Chief Jim Helton. Unfortunately, this also impedes other traffic on the street.
Ward 1 Alderman Rudy Via, who also serves as the local fire chief, expressed concerns. He noted emergency vehicles may be hindered in responding to calls in that direction.
The ordinance was discussed, but not passed into law. That is expected to happen at a special meeting scheduled for tonight, at 5:15 p.m. Oct. 14. The aldermen will also be selecting an insurance plan for city employees.
