The Gerald Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored a community roundtable last Wednesday, Feb. 24, in their historic Depot.
11 people attended the event and none were shy with presenting both problems and solutions.
The group began with quickly listing businesses and activities they would like see in town. These included: a grocery store, a splash park, small engine repair, veterinarian, chiropractor, eye doctor and donut/coffee shop.
A new grocery store topped the list of concerns. Otis Schulte and Kathy Foy, both with the Gerald Development Association, noted their group had reached out to other groceries in the area. The discussion continued with individuals deciding on further outreach actions and who could best achieve those.
Another attendee noted that there seemed to be a disconnect between the city and the business community. He suggested investigating Tax Increment Financing (TIF) as a possible way to attract businesses.
It was also noted that the city could forgive a portion of the sales tax as a way to attract a grocery.
Improving the town’s appearance was also discussed. There was considerable interest shown in sponsoring work days to allow volunteers to do some of the work.
The discussion was thought provoking. The next step is creating a solid plan.
