Dropping a 10-1 decision at OHS Field in Four Rivers Conference (FRC) action against Sullivan’s Eagles last Tuesday, Steven Kemp’s Owensville varsity Dutchmen looked to bounce back two nights later last Thursday night with Union’s Wildcats paying a visit to Owensville fresh off a 22-0 shutout of Hermann.
With Dutchmen ace Chase Weirich on the mound, he limited Union to one run on five hits over five and two-thirds innings before Tucker Sassmann came on for a four-out save giving the orange and black a 3-1 victory over the visiting Wildcats.
Without the aid of a hit, Owensville pushed two runs across against Union in the bottom of the first inning.
Weirich helped his own cause leading off the game being hit by a pitch.
Replaced on the base paths by courtesy runner Cael Walker, Sassmann was also hit by a pitch putting two runners on with no outs.
Two batters late, Chris Allen was hit by another pitch to load the bases for Dutchmen shortstop Gabe Medlock.
Allen was replaced on the bases by fellow courtesy runner Liam Rasmussen.
Drawing an eight-pitch walk, Medlock drove in Walker helping the orange and black draw first blood.
Sassmann then doubled the Dutchmen lead to 2-0 when he scored on an RBI ground out off the bat of Leyton Homeyer.
Union would get a run back in the top of the second inning on two hits and two walks trimming the OHS lead in half to 2-1 through two innings.
After pitching around a single and a hit batter in the top of the third inning, Weirich gave the Dutchmen offense a chance to add to their one-run lead.
Sassmann led off the bottom of the third inning with a single before scoring on an Allen RBI single giving Owensville their two-run lead back at 3-1.
Earning the win, Weirich threw 106 pitches over five and two-thirds inning allowing a run on five hits and two walks to go with eight strikeouts.
Sassmann needed just 23 pitches to earn the save pitching an inning and a third of shutout baseball allowing two hits and no walks to go with two strikeouts.
Owensville’s JV Dutchmen fell 12-0 in three innings to Union.
Last Tuesday hosting Sullivan, Owensville scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when Medlock singled and scored on a Homeyer RBI single.
Unable to overcome a seven-run top of the fourth inning by Sullivan, Owensville only managed five hits against the Eagles.
Medlock added a sixth-inning single while Henry Womack, Homeyer and Sassmann each also had hits against Sullivan.
Homeyer took the loss pitching four and two-thirds innings allowing nine runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks to go with two strikeouts.
During their 12-1 loss in JV action against Sullivan, Owensville scored their lone run in the bottom of the third inning when Elliott Phillips scored on a Payten Pendleton RBI ground out after he was hit by pitch.
Facing St. James in rescheduled Four Rivers Conference (FRC) baseball action on the road last night (Tuesday), OHS will stay in FRC play tomorrow (Thursday) traveling to Hermann with Gasconade County baseball bragging rights on the line before heading to western Missouri to compete in the WOW Wood Bat Tournament over the weekend.
