Dutchgirl spikers turn back Linn in five-set showdown

LINN — Three matches in three nights.

That was the task in front of Jamie Ridenhour’s Owensville Dutchgirl volleyball teams last week.

Capping the trifecta of road action last Thursday in Linn, OHS looked to bounce back from a tripleheader sweep at the hands of Washington’s Lady Blue Jays last Wednesday.

Owensville’s C-team swept Linn in two sets 25-11 and 25-10 before the junior varsity counterparts needed three sets to tame the Lady Wildcats 22-25, 25-9 and 16-14.

Varsity action went back and forth with Linn taking game one before Owensville came back to win the next two sets.

Linn took game four to force a deciding fifth set before Owensville took that to win the match in five sets 16-25, 25-23, 25-18, 12-25 and 15-4.

“I’m proud of our girls for griding out a five-set victory over Linn capping a stretch of three road matches in three nights,” Ridenhour said.

Senior Mckenzy Echols led the Dutchgirls against Linn with 16 kills. Addi Menz (9) and Ayla Schmanke (8) just missed double digits in the kill department.

Ally Gooch and McKenna Edwards each served up four aces to lead Owensville in that department.

Liz Adams also chipped in three aces against Linn.

Callie Koelling recorded a team-high two blocks while Mya Vandegriffe, Madi Lewis, Menz and Schmanke each added a block.

In addition to her four aces, Edwards paced the Dutchgirls with a team-high 20 digs followed in double digits by Adams with 12 digs.

Gooch added to her four aces by dishing out a team-high 27 assists against the Lady Wildcats.

Last Wednesday at Washington, the Dutchgirls looked to win their second road match in as many nights after sweeping Wright City the night before.

Unable to overcome numerous errors throughout the varsity match, Owensville fell to Washington in three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-18.

Echols led the Dutchgirls against Washington with eight kills.

Serving aces against the Lady Blue Jays were Cam Caldwell, Makensy Pigg, Echols and Edwards.

Koelling recorded two blocks to lead Owensville against the Lady Blue Jays.

Edwards (20) and Adams (14) both reached double digits in digs against Washington while Gooch dished out a team-high eight assists.

Opening their season last Tuesday at Wright City, Ridenhour’s Dutchgirl swept the varsity match by scores of 25-12, 25-22 and 25-7.

Echols (9) and Schmanke (8) led Owensville in kills against the Lady Wildcats.

Adding to her team-high nine kills, Echols also served up a team-high four aces.

Adams, Caldwell and Gooch each added three aces while Edwards and Pigg each added a pair of service aces.

Menz recorded a team-high four blocks against Wright City while Gooch led OHS with nine digs and 13 assists.

Alexis Decker’s junior varsity Dutchgirls also swept Wright City in two sets 25-15 and 25-16.

After road matches this week at Belle and Salem, Owensville will kick off the home portion of their schedule hosting Capital City’s Lady Cavaliers on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 4:30 p.m.
