CUBA — Matt Kramme’s Owensville Dutchgirl basketball team got a shot at revenge last Monday night during opening-round action of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 4, District 3 Girls Basketball Tournament hosted by Cuba High School.
Dropping their first home game of the season 42-31 against St. Clair’s Lady Bulldogs back in early December, Kramme’s Dutchgirls got the chance to avenge that loss in Crawford County.
Trailing 12-10 after one quarter, Owensville went into halftime within striking distance trailing St. Clair 27-23 after a back-and-forth second quarter which saw the Dutchgirls hold a brief lead.
Outscored 15-8 in the third quarter to go into the fourth trailing 42-31, Owensville kept getting their deficit under single digits only to see the Lady Bulldogs have an answer every time before the Dutchgirls ended their season at 5-21 following a 60-50 loss.
Seven first-quarter points from Cameron Ryerson helped the orange and black stay within a bucket of St. Clair before Lainey Moss and Ryerson each led Owensville in the second quarter with four points apiece.
Ryan Miller added three second-quarter points while Abbey Quilacio capped the Dutchgirl scoring in the first half with two points.
Piper Koelling found the scoring column in the third quarter scoring six of Owensville’s eight points while Quilacio accounted for the other two points.
Edging St. Clair 19-18 in the fourth quarter, Ryerson showed the way with six points followed by five markers from Quilacio.
Shae Abernathy hit a fourth-quarter 3-pointer to go along with two points apiece from Koelling and Moss.
Cambell Schulte capped the Dutchgirl scoring in the final eight minutes with a free throw for one point.
Ryerson led the Dutchgirl offense with 17 points and five rebounds while Koelling and Quilacio both nearly made it three double-digit Dutchgirls scoring eight points each.
Quilacio added seven assists and five rebounds to her eight points.
Moss finished with six points, five rebounds and two assists while Cylee Reed and Abernathy each chipped in three points.
Meredith Reed and Kinley Troncin were also on the bench for the varsity Dutchgirls last Monday night.
St. Clair went on to fall to top-seeded Cuba in the district semifinals before St. James’ Lady Tigers defeated Cuba in the title game capturing their fifth consecutive district title.
“I’m proud of the girls for playing hard all season and never giving up,” Kramme said. “While we may not have won a lot of games, we kept showing improvement each night and we will use that to build on in the offseason.”
