Matched up with a pair of Highway 19 baseball teams out of Crawford County early last week, Steven Kemp’s Owensville Dutchmen squad looked to end their regular season on a winning note.
Riding the momentum of an eight-run first inning to a 12-2 victory over Steelville last Monday at OHS Field, the orange and black then took a short trek south on Highway 19 to Cuba High School in order to face the host Wildcats looking to end their regular season with wins in five of their last six games.
Able to erase a 4-0 first-inning deficit over the next three innings, Owensville held on for a 7-5 victory over the host Wildcats behind a solid pitching outing from Chase Weirich that saw him throw six and a third innings in relief of starter Chris Allen.
Earning the win, Weirich allowed an unearned run on seven hits and no walks to go with 13 strikeouts.
Beginning to chip away at an early 4-0 deficit, Owensville got on the board in the top of the second inning when Westin Kramme was hit by a pitch before later scoring on a wild pitch to trim the Dutchmen deficit to 4-1 after two innings.
Owensville continued their offensive onslaught with two runs in the top of the third inning when Jax Johnston walked and scored after Allen reached on an error.
Allen was the relieved on the bases by courtesy runner Liam Rasmussen who then scored on a Weirich RBI triple trimming the Cuba lead to 4-3 through three innings.
During Owensville’s three-run top of the fourth inning, the orange and black tied the game when Gabe Medlock singled before scoring on a Leyton Homeyer RBI triple.
Homeyer then scored on an Allen RBI double putting the Dutchmen in front 5-4 before Rasmussen came on for Allen as a courtesy runner and scored Owensville’s sixth run of the game on a Tucker Sassmann RBI single.
Owensville scored their final run of the game on a Sassmann RBI single driving in Rasmussen after Allen’s third hit of the game on a lead-off single.
Dutchmen vs. Steelville
Welcoming Steelville’s Cardinals to OHS Field last Monday afternoon, Owensville’s Dutchmen looked to bounce back from a 5-2 loss the previous Friday at the hands of Dixon’s Bulldogs.
Falling behind briefly 1-0 entering the bottom of the first inning, the Dutchmen sent 13 batters to the plate leading to eight runs on four hits, two walks, two hit batters and three errors.
OHS eventually added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning helping them end the game via the 10-run mercy rule 12-2 in five innings.
Out hitting the Cardinals 11-6, Allen led the orange and black with three hits and four RBIs while Bryce Kramme also had a multi-hit game for Owensville with two hits.
Accounting for the remainder of the OHS hits with one apiece were Westin Kramme, Henry Loeb, Homeyer, Weirich, Sassmann and Johnston.
Gabe Medlock, Homeyer and Allen each also drew a walk.
Of Owensville’s 12 runs, Westin Kramme, Johnston and Rasmussen each scored a pair while George Vandegriffe, Cael Walker, Homeyer, Sassmann, Weirich and Medlock each scored a run.
OHS was scheduled to open play in the semifinals of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 4, District 9 Tournament at Osage High School last night (Tuesday) against Eldon. With thunderstorms in the forecast, the possibility of the game being postponed to later in the week was possible.
