Federal docket lists Oct. 6 as date for Jakob trial

Posted

On Tuesday, according to the federal court docket, Bill A. Jakob waived his right for an evidentiary hearing and a jury trial has been set  for Oct. 6.

Jakob has been charged with 18 counts of false personation in making

arrests and searches, and one count of providing a false statement in

connection to his association with the Gerald Police Department.

An additional four counts, including one each for mail and wire

fraud and two more counts of false personations connected to fraudulent

scheme involving the Army Corps of Engineers. These occurred when Jakob

was employed by Total Lock & Security Company.

Joel Schwartz, the attorney representing Jakob, has previously told reporters that his client would be pleading guilty.

When reached for comment,  Schwartz told The Republican, “Every case

is set for trial, they have to have some sort of setting. I don’t think

we’ll be going to trial on October 6.”

When asked for comment on the story that Jakob has optioned his life

rights to a Hollywood producer, Scwhartz replied, “I’m a criminal

defense lawyer.”

Michael Fleming’s July 30 story concerning a possible film about Jakob’s scam in Gerald was released on Variety.com.

That story also quotes Schwarz: “He’s not saying he didn’t do it,

and he has cooperated with authorities, and I’d be shocked if he saw

the inside of a courtroom,” Schwartz said. “He’s not proclaiming to the

world that he’s proud of what he did, but he did make some good arrests

of some bad guys. He received no remuneration at all, and he worked 15

hours a day for about six months.”

Schwartz gave no indication as to which “arrests” that Jakob made would be considered good.

Variety further reports producer John Davis, Dan Spilo and David

Klawans have purchased the option on the Jakob story. “We’ll turn the

tone to darkly comedic, but we don’t have to go away from reality to

make this amazingly fun and absurd story,” Spilo was quoted as saying.

Further charges against at least one other individual are still expected to be filed.
