PACIFIC — Last Tuesday at Pacific High School, Brandon Howard’s Owensville Dutchgirl and Dustin Howard’s Owensville Dutchmen wrestlers looked to leave Indian country with as many medals and wins as possible during the annual Four Rivers Conference (FRC) Wrestling Tournament.
Once the final match concluded and all of the medals were handed out, a total of five Owensville Dutchmen and Dutchgirl grapplers left Pacific as FRC champions.
For Dustin Howard’s Dutchmen, three wrestlers left topping their respective weight classes in Bo Buddemeyer (138 pounds), Steven Buddemeyer (144) and Liam Rasmussen (150).
Recently achieved by Rylee and Bailee Dare, the Buddemeyer’s became the first set of brothers to win FRC titles in their respective weight classes during the tournament era.
“Bo and Steven are so much fun to watch and to see them both win FRC titles was awesome,” Dustin Howard said. “Hopefully they don’t have to battle each other for a varsity spot at districts as they’re so close to each other in weight.”
Bo Buddemeyer pinned his way to a FRC title with wins by fall over Pacific’s Grant Kossuth (2:33), St. James’ Ian Lucas (3:05) and Sullivan’s Carsen Dudley (:31).
Winning all five of his matches throughout the day at 144 pounds, Buddemeyer posted wins by fall over Union’s Adam Briggs (1:00), Sullivan’s Brayden Kisner (1:45) and Pacific’s Nicholas Lanzendorf (3:07).
He also posted a win by medical forfeit over St. James’ Elijah Eads before clinching his FRC title winning an 8-2 decision over St. Clair’s Cole Horton.
Having to win a wrestle-off just to get to varsity the day before, Rasmussen recorded four wins by fall and a decision to secure his FRC title at 150 pounds.
Wins by fall for Rasmussen came over St. Clair’s Ashton Feuerborn (3:29), St. James’ Lucas Bell (:26), Union’s Riley Collier (1:00) and Sullivan’s Blake Watson (:35).
Rasmussen secured his FRC title winning a 9-4 decision over Pacific’s Sam Osborn.
Will Coppedge also earned All-FRC honors with a second-place finish at 175 pounds with wins by fall over St. Clair’s DJ Ball (3:25) and St. James’ Lucas White (:50).
Diego Lansford made the medal stand at 132 pounds for the Dutchmen placing third with a win by fall over St. James’ Owen Jackson in 3:01.
Peyton Pohlmann placed fourth at 157 pounds for Owensville with wins by fall over Union’s Brady Butenhoff (:39) and St. James’ Ryder Hannekin (1:08).
Logan Kiesling also took fourth place at 215 pounds for the Dutchmen with a win by fall over Pacific’s Landon Branson in 5:02.
Henry Loeb also scored a fourth-place finish at 285 pounds via a win by fall over Sullivan’s Xander Loyd in 1:08.
Cael Walker was able to secure fifth place at 190 pounds with a win by fall in his final match of the tournament over Sullivan’s Nathan Garcia in 1:22.
Zach Barch joined Walker with a fifth-place finish in the 165-pound weight class with a win by fall over St. James’ Gavyn King in 3:42.
Rounding out the contingency of Dutchmen wrestlers at the FRC Tournament, Grayson Lairmore also took fifth place with a win by fall over St. James’ Simon Tessaro in 1:48.
Owensville placed third as a team with 225 points behind Pacific (369.5) and St. Clair (257).
Brandon Howard’s Dutchgirl wrestlers had two grapplers leave Pacific with FRC titles in junior Rylee Dare and senior Lexis Manning.
Dare needed only one win by fall over Pacific’s Sofia Krehmeyer in 1:27 to secure her third FRC title as there were only two wrestlers at 145 pounds.
Manning was able to cap her OHS Dutchgirl wrestling career as a FRC champion with wins by fall over Pacific’s Ava Smith in 2:25 and St. Clair’s Alexis Brison in 3:03).
Four Dutchgirls also earned All-FRC honors with second-place finishes in their respective weight classes helping them place third as a team with 229 points behind St. Clair (322) and Pacific (254).
With only three wrestlers at 100 pounds, freshman Brianna Bodine had to wait until the final rounds of the day to battle for a FRC title.
Bodine pinned St. Clair’s Aaniyah Childs in :25 before losing a 10-5 decision to Pacific’s Madelyn Rush leaving her in second place.
Anieya Bergesch pinned Union’s Amelia Boyer in 2:56) before losing by fall in 1:14 to St. Clair’s Amy Jahnsen leaving her settling for second place at 115 pounds.
Violet Lavalle also earned All-FRC honors with her second-place finish at 130 pounds with wins by fall over Pacific’s Skarlett White (3:03), Sullivan’s Kambria Bridgeman (2:30) and St. Clair’s Kaylee Rau (:54).
Lavalle was pinned by eventual FRC champion Kaitlyn Kuelker (Union) in 4:00.
Brooke Tainter also secured All-FRC honors with her second-place finish at 170 pounds with win by fall over Union’s Savannah Woods (4:31) and Sullivan’s Khloe Thacker (1:25).
Payton Busenhart also claimed a spot on the medal stand with a third-place finish at 110 pounds in spite of losses by fall to St. Clair’s Callie DeClue (4:25) and Pacific’s Bentleigh Frisch (2:00).
At 155 pounds, Aaliyah Taylor placed fourth for the Dutchgirls in spite of being injured during her second match of the tournament.
Competing at 235 pounds, Maci Armstrong rounded out Owensville’s contingency of Dutchgirl wrestlers with a fifth-place finish.
“All of our girls wrestled hard today and I’m proud of each and everyone of them,” Brandon Howard said.
Competing last night (Tuesday) in a tri-meet at St. Francis Borgia, Owensville’s Dutchmen and Dutchgirls will compete this weekend during their respective Fort Zumwalt South Wrestling Tournaments in St. Peters.
