Even with their season ending following a 5-1 loss to the eventual district champion Eldon Mustangs, Steven Kemp’s Owensville Dutchmen baseball team had four of his players earn postseason honors from either the coaches of the Four Rivers Conference (FRC) or the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 4, District 9 Tournament hosted by School of the Osage.
Orange and black baseball players named to the MSHSAA Class 4, District 9 Baseball Team included seniors Chase Weirich and Chris Allen along with the sophomore duo of Tucker Sassmann and Gabe Medlock.
Leading the Dutchmen in several statistical categories, Sassmann posted a .494 batting average, .569 on-base percentage (OBP), 1.109 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) and a .540 slugging percentage.
He also led the Dutchmen with 43 hits and 40 singles.
Sassmann also posted two doubles, a triple, 15 runs batted in (RBI), 10 runs scored and 10 walks during his sophomore season.
Recording a season-high four hits against Salem, all four of those base hits were singles against the Tigers for Sassmann.
Doubling against Sullivan and New Haven, Sassmann’s lone triple of the season came in their OHS Field opener against Hazelwood West.
Posting a season-best three RBIs against Linn, Sassmann also scored two runs against St. James and Union in FRC action.
Drawing two walks against Linn, Sassmann was also hit by a pitch twice against Steelville to account for part of his team-leading five times he was hit by a pitch.
Swiping two bases against Hazelwood West and St. James, Sassmann’s best outing as a pitcher came against Capital City where he pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout against Capital City while also striking out 10 Cavalier batters.
Now preparing for his freshman season as an East Central College (ECC) Falcon, Weirich finished his senior season in a Dutchmen uniform leading OHS in runs scored (16), walks (13) and doubles (8).
Weirich was also second with a 1.004 OPS while also posting a .389 batting average and a .533 slugging percentage both good for third place.
He was also fourth on the team with a .471 on-base percentage.
In the pitching department, Weirich led the team with 51 innings pitched, 73 strikeouts and a 5-3 record.
His best hitting games came against Hazelwood West and Moberly with three which were all singles.
Posting a double in eight games, Weirich took two bases in games against East Carter, Boonville, Salem, Moberly, Chillicothe, Hermann, Steelville and Faith Christian Academy.
Weirich’s two triples came in Highway 19 baseball action against Hermann and Cuba while his lone home run of the season came on senior night at OHS Field against New Haven’s Shamrocks.
Driving in a season-high three RBIs against Linn, Weirich also recorded three walks and three stolen bases while also scoring three runs against Salem.
On the mound, Weirich’s wins came against Hazelwood West, Union, St. James, Cuba and New Haven.
Striking out a season-high 14 Shamrocks, Weirich also reached double digits in strikeouts against Cuba (13) and Eldon (10) in the district semifinals.
Catching the bulk of the action for OHS, Allen led the orange and black with two home runs and 25 RBIs while also placing second for OHS in batting average (.421), slugging percentage (.537), hits (40), singles (33), doubles (five) and hit by pitches (four).
Allen recorded three hits in games against Hazelwood West, Hermann, Linn and Steelville. All of his hits against Hazelwood West were singles.
Doubling against Hermann, Borgia, Linn, Steelville and Cuba, Allen also hit home runs in showdowns against Pacific and Hermann.
Allen’s best offensive night came against the Bearcats with five RBIs.
On offense, Medlock was fourth on the team for OHS in hits (22), singles (19), doubles (3) and walks (8).
In terms of averages, Medlock posted a .262 batting average good for fifth place amongst the orange and black while also sixth with a .645 OPS and a .298 slugging percentage.
His .347 on-base percentage placed him seventh for the diamond Dutchmen.
Throwing 35 and a third innings for the Dutchmen, Medlock also struck out 21 batters.
Among his 22 hits, Medlock had two of them against Hazelwood West, Rolla, Salem, Moberly, Sullivan and Benton (St. Joseph).
Both of the hits against Moberly, Sullivan and Benton were singles for Medlock.
He also doubled in action against Rolla, Salem and Hazelwood West.
He had a RBI apiece in contests against Rolla, Salem, Greenfield, Union, Hermann, Dixon and Steelville.
Scoring twice against Linn and Hazelwood West, Medlock also walked twice against Moberly while steal two bases against Cuba.
A complete list of MSHSAA Class 4, District 9 Baseball Team selections from Osage was not available at press time.
Weirich, Allen and Sassmann were also named to the All-FRC First Team.
Joining the OHS trio on the All-FRC Baseball First Team selections included Union senior Klay Muser, Owensville senior Chase Weirich, Owensville senior Chris Allen, Sullivan senior Mitchell Garner, Union sophomore Timmy Purschke, Owensville sophomore Tucker Sassmann, Pacific junior Grant Kossuth, Pacific senior Nate Ball, Pacific senior Colton Kossuth, Sullivan junior Landon Doza, Sullivan senior Chase Blue, St. Clair senior Easton Martin, Sullivan junior Raiden Redd, Union senior Zac Voss and Union senior Logan Hansel.
Pacific’s Colton Kossuth was named the FRC Player of the Year.
Named to the All-FRC Second Team were Pacific sophomore Gavin Haddox, St. Clair senior Caleb Bradshaw, St. Clair senior Nate Short, Pacific sophomore Colton Burt, Union senior Ryan Stowe, Union sophomore Damon Blankenship, St. James senior JV Meurer, St. Clair junior Jude Dierker, St. Clair senior Clayton Ingram, Union senior Tucker Lemons and Sullivan senior Alex Toews.
