Police Chief Jim Helton obtained approval from the Board of Alderman at a special meeting Aug. 4, to hire another police officer.
Helton says James Birmingham was hired as a full-time officer for a six month probationary period at a rate of pay of $15.50 per hour. He began working Friday, Aug. 6.
Birmingham comes from the New Haven Police Department, but before that he spent many years with the Owensville force.
Earlier, Helton had gotten permission to hire Charles Best, but says Best was not hired.
The hiring of Birmingham brings Gerald’s police force to its normal four man capacity. He replaces Brian Hofstra who left the department in July.
