Deric Anthony Rugen of Gerald was sentenced Feb. 14, to 15 years for abuse/neglect of a child, a class B felony and to seven years for Class D felony of second degree domestic assault in the Department of Corrections.
The sentencing is a result an investigation begun Jan. 10, 2020 when the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Springfield Child Advocacy Center. Detectives went there to interview a woman who said she had fled from Rugen’s home in Gerald after dropping him off at work to escape a domestic violence situation, in which her two year-old was injured.
The Detective Bureau conducted their investigation and submitted their report to the prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review. An arrest warrant was issued for Rugen March 17, 2020.
A bench trial was conducted Oct. 2, 2023 in which Rugen was found guilty, according to Sheriff Steve Pelton.
