GES third-graders raise funds for Ceci

Posted

Cecilia (Ceci) Mitchell was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she began suffering seizures shortly after birth. She underwent surgery to remove part of the tumor in late March. All this has put a strain on her parents, Gerry and Corina Mitchell who have an older daughter, Lillian.

Of course, the town has rallied around them particularly the Gerald-Rosebud Fire Department of which Gerry is an active member.

Mrs. Powell, third grade teacher at Gerald Elementary School, suggested the Mitchell family as a reipient for her class’s February kindness project.

Her students enthusiastically agreed and began raising money. They were creative in finding the cash. Some mowed yards, one dusted baseboards for family and friends, some used money otherwise earmarked for the book fair, some brought in their allowance and a few hit up their parents for cash. Students and teachers in other classes also contributed. These youngsters managed to raise $430.

Ceci, her mother and sister, and family friends Jack, Rebecca and Lacy Clark all came to thank the class. They brought along coupons donated by Rosebud General Store for a free ice cream for each student.

The Clarks are also instrumental in organizing a benefit for Ceci to be held this Saturday, May 6, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Gerald.

A cornhole tournament begins at noon. There will be food, drink, kids activities and a huge silent auction throughout the day.

If you attend, you may find a few of Mrs. Powell’s students there as well finding another opportunity to spread kindness. Just like they were taught at school.
