Ignoring the law destroys society

Each week I include a quote at the bottom of our front page — different for each of our three newspapers. While searching for an appropriate quote for last week’s publications, I stumbled on a quote that hit me as profound.

The excerpt comes from Thomas Campbell Clark. I had never heard of him. A Democrat, Clark served as the 59th United States Attorney General and then as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

A little history on Clark. He was nominated for U.S. Attorney General by President Harry S. Truman. He served as AG from 1945 to 1949. In 1948 Clark informed the White House that he wanted to return to his home state of Texas and practice law.

Those plans were scrapped after the unexpected death of Supreme Court Associate Justice Frank Murphy. Truman nominated Clark for that position. He was confirmed by the Senate on Aug. 19, 1949 by a vote of 73-8.

According to Wikipedia, a leading Supreme Court scholar called Clark “the most underrated Justice in recent Supreme Court history.” Clark served on the court until 1967 when Thurgood Marshall succeeded him.

The quote from Clark I stumbled upon was, “Nothing can destroy a government more quickly than its failure to observe its own laws.”

I would substitute “society” for government.

Who among the readers of this column disagrees with Clark’s statement?

I would put forth that many leaders of the current Democrat party either don’t believe this statement by Clark or — more likely — their purpose is to destroy the government of the United States and our society.

Democrat leaders keep pushing America towards the cliff, because that is their goal. There is plenty of evidence to back up this accusation.

On June 7, Heritage Foundation fellow Steven Bradbury, testifying before Congress, listed six examples of violations of U.S. law by the Biden administration concerning immigration policy on our Southern border.

“Together, these violations of law,” Bradbury said, “have produced a colossal humanitarian disaster and a catastrophe for America.”

It is a criminal offense to picket or parade near a residence of a federal judge to influence the outcome of a judicial proceeding. Last year, after it was leaked that the Supreme Court was going to overturn Roe v. Wade, Biden encouraged people to violate the law by protesting at justices’ homes. Biden’s Department of Justice then refused to enforce that law.

Democrats have a history of ignoring laws passed by Congress. In 1963 Alabama Governor George Wallace personally tried to stop two black students from entering the University of Alabama.

Now, with the financial backing of George Soros — and some other billionaires — elected Democrat prosecuting attorneys in several states are refusing to prosecute entire categories of crimes.

In 2022 Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg issued a memo directing his staff not to prosecute the following crimes; marijuana possession, turnstile jumping, trespassing, resisting arrest, interfering with an arrest and prostitution.

Biden’s attempt to forgive $300 billion in student loan debt — struck down by the Supreme Court —was an example of his administration violating the Constitution through executive orders.

Just last month, two professors, Mark Tushnet of Harvard and San Francisco State University political scientist Aaron Belkin sent “An Open Letter to the Biden Administration on Popular Constitutionalism.” In the letter, they encourage Biden to ignore rulings from the Supreme Court he disagrees with.

“We urge President Biden to restrain MAGA justices immediately by announcing that if and when they issue rulings that are based on gravely mistaken interpretations of the Constitution that undermine our most fundamental commitments, the Administration will be guided by its own constitutional interpretations,” they wrote.

Are not calls to ignore the highest court in the country akin to overthrowing the Constitution?

This shows how far the Democrat party has shifted to the extreme left. If a law is inconvenient, or you disagree with a ruling from the Supreme Court just disregard it.
