An informational meeting on the proposed Rock Island Trail will be held Thursday, Jan. 31 at The Bistro at the Mill. A meet and greet will begin at 5 p.m. with a presentation following at 6 p.m.
Board members of the Missouri Rock Island Trail, Inc. will be on hand to answer questions from the public and provide accurate information on the status of the trail.
The free event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.
The Rock Island Trail would follow the path of the old Rock Island Railroad, which runs through Gerald. Upon completion, the trail would begin at Beaufort and continue west until it connects with the Katy Trail near Kansas City. Preliminary plans show the trail will, in the beginning, extend east only to Gerald, with an extension to Beaufort planned for later.
Such trails have had a huge, positive economic impact on small towns on their path. The Gerald community must be educated and prepared to make some important decisions for its future.
