NEW HAVEN — Turning back Union 57-44 in first-round action at the New Haven Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Tournament, Scott Lewis’ Owensville JV Dutchmen dropped a 68-33 championship semifinal decision to St. James’ Tigers sending them to Saturday’s third-place game against Sullivan’s Eagles.
Doubling up the Eagles 10-5 after one quarter, Owensville took a 22-15 halftime lead before going on to hold off Sullivan 40-36 for third-place hardware from the land of the Shamrocks.
Koen Brooks led the JV Dutchmen with 19 points followed by nine points from Kylen Menz.
Wyatt Bone added six points while Andrew Budnik hit a first-quarter 3-pointer accounting for his three points in the game.
Charlie Katsov rounded out the JV Dutchmen scoring with a fourth-quarter bucket for two points.
Blake Tolliver paced Sullivan with 12 points.
JV Dutchmen vs. St. James
Falling behind 21-5 after one quarter against St. James’ JV Tigers, Owensville’s JV Dutchmen wound up being sent to the third-place game of the New Haven JV Boys Tournament after being outscored 35-16 in the second half of their 68-33 loss last Thursday night.
Brooks led the JV Dutchmen scoring 13 of his team-high 16 points in the first half.
Bone followed with five points in addition to three points apiece from Tanner Mogensen and Budnik.
Kylen Menz and Broden Kelley each chipped in two points while Tyler Menz and Ryder Wehmeyer both added a point on free throws rounding out the JV Dutchmen scoring.
Dom Giacolone led four St. James JV Tigers in double figures with 13 points.
Westin Ridenhour (11), Tripp Jones (11) and Easton Huffman (10) also reached double digits in scoring for St. James.
JV Dutchmen vs. Union
Opening play at New Haven last Wednesday night against Union’s JV Wildcats, Lewis’ JV Dutchmen broke an 11-11 tie after one quarter going into halftime with a 31-23 lead before going on to post a double-digit victory moving into the championship side of the bracket.
Brooks paced the JV Dutchmen with 15 points while Cohen Dare just missed joining him in double figures finishing with nine points.
Mogensen and Katsov each added six points to go along with four points apiece from Tyler Menz and Bone.
Budnik scored all three of his points in the first quarter while Wehmeyer rounded out the JV Dutchmen scoring against Union with a fourth-quarter bucket for two points.
