Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning during last Monday’s home and season opener against South Callaway’s Lady Bulldogs, Hermann scratched across three runs to take a 5-4 lead into the sixth inning.

South Callaway answered with nine runs in the top of the sixth inning leaving the host Lady Bearcats on the wrong end of a 13-6 final score.

Striking first in the bottom of the second inning, Hermann Dakota’s Greunke doubled and later scored on a passed ball giving the Lady Bearcats an early 1-0 lead through two innings at Dick Ochsner Ball Park.

Keeping South Callaway off the scoreboard in the top of the third inning, Hermann doubled their lead to 2-0 in the bottom half of the third when Allison Brown doubled and scored on an Alivia Witthaus RBI single.

South Callaway then got on the board in the top of the fourth inning with a run on a hit, two walks and a hit batter.

Unable to answer in the bottom half of the fourth, Hermann saw South Callaway plate three runs on three hits and two walks in the top of the fifth inning leaving them trailing 4-2 at the midway point of the game.

Behind four hits and a walk in the bottom of the fifth inning, Hermann retook the lead when Greunke and Witthaus scored on a Taylor Grotewiel two-RBI single.

Allison Brown also walked and scored in the frame on a Greunke RBI double.

Following South Callaway’s nine-run top of the sixth inning, the Lady Bearcats could only get one of those back when Delilah Nobel singled and scored on an Isabelle Brown RBI ground out.

Isabelle Brown took the tough-luck loss for Hermann pitching five and a third innings allowing nine hits and 10 runs (eight earned) to go with seven walks and 10 strikeouts.

Allison Brown pitched an inning and two-thirds of relief allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks to go with three strikeouts.

Witthaus, Greunke and Grotewiel each led the Lady Bearcats with three hits while Allison Brown and Greunke both scored two runs.

Hermann also fell 18-11 last Thursday night at home against Community R-6’s Lady Trojans.

Lady Bearcat softball will return to action tomorrow (Thursday) hosting St. Clair’s Lady Bulldogs at Dick Ochsner Ball Park with a 4:30 p.m., first pitch.
