CUBA — Falling 6-5 in their second game of the Cuba Invitational Softball Tournament against Newburg’s Lady Wolves, Chris Leibach’s Hermann Lady Bearcats looked to end their portion of the tournament on a winning note against St. James’ Lady Tigers.
Leading 10-1 after two innings against St. James, Hermann added six runs to their total over the next two innings before holding off a last-ditch rally in the bottom of the fourth inning of their 16-9 victory in four innings due to the tournament time-limit rule.
Playing as the visitors against St. James, Delilah Nobel led the game off with a walk before scoring on a Izzy Brown RBI single.
Allison Brown then reached on an error before Dakota Greunke delivered a two-out, two-RBI triple giving the Lady Bearcats an early 3-0 lead.
Allowing a run on a hit and two errors in the bottom of the first inning, Hermann got that run back and then some in the top of the second inning.
Harper Priess started the frame with a one-out walk before Nobel tripled her in.
Alivia Witthaus and Penny Cramer also walked and scored in the top of the second inning before Taylor Grotewiel tripled and scored on a Lillie Barker RBI single.
Izzy Brown earned the win pitching three and two-thirds innings allowing nine runs (one earned) on four hits and eight walks to go with four strikeouts.
Nobel scored a team-high four runs against St. James while also record two hits, two runs batted in (RBI) and a pair of walks.
Allison Brown also scored three runs to go with a hit, a RBI and a walk.
Witthaus walked and scored twice while Cramer had a hit, walk and a RBI.
Kapri Bruno scored two runs as a courtesy runner for Hermann while Camryn Isaak also scored a run as a courtesy runner.
During Hermann’s 6-5 loss against Newburg, Witthaus led the Lady Bearcats with two hits while Izzy Brown accounted for the other hit against the Lady Wolves.
Scoring for the Lady Bearcats against Newburg were Witthaus, Cramer, Greunke, Priess and Isaak.
Allison Brown took the tough-luck loss for Hermann pitching four and two-thirds innings allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks to go with four strikeouts.
Opening the Cuba Invitational Softball Tournament against the host Cuba Lady Wildcats Saturday morning, Hermann plated 14 runs in the first inning before going on to a 22-3 victory in three innings.
Nobel had three hits, two RBIs ad four runs scored while Witthaus and Izzy Brown each scored three runs.
Scoring two runs apiece in the win for Hermann against Cuba were Allison Brown, Cramer, Greunke, Barker, Priess and Isaak.
Prior to the Cuba Tournament last Thursday, Hermann opened Four Rivers Conference (FRC) play with a 22-12 victory over St. Clair’s Lady Bulldogs.
Nobel and Izzy Brown each had four hits while Izzy Brown drove in a game-high five RBIs.
Allison Brown, Witthaus and Greunke each had three hits while combining for nine RBIs between the three of them.
Tied at 12-12 after three innings, Hermann broke the game open with 10 unanswered runs over the next three frames.
Allison Brown earned the win pitching two and a third innings of scoreless relief allowing no hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts.
