COLUMBIA — Another state medal.

That was on the mind of Owensville Dutchgirl sophomore Ilene Limberg during the Class 3 Girls race in the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Cross Country Championships held in Columbia Saturday at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course.

Running in the third race of the day Saturday, Limberg hovered near the top 15 throughout the entirety of the race.

Running as high as 12th at the 2,000-meter split, Limberg wound up placing 18th in a time of 20:11.2.

“I thought I could’ve finished higher but I’m pleased that I was able to earn another state medal,” Limberg said.

Finishing amongst a field of strong runners at districts, those same harriers joined Limberg in the top 25.

Led by Southern Boone’s Alexandra Volkart (1st), a total of 10 runners from the district 3 meet in Fulton the previous weekend made up the Class 3 girls top 25.

Top-25 finishers from district three along with Volkart and Limberg included Montgomery County’s Lyric Ford (4th), Fulton’s Emery Mayfield (5th Southern Boone’s Evan Mauney (6th), St. Charles West’s Genevieve Wacker (7th), Winfield’s Kadence Berry (10th), Centralia’s Jocelyn Bostick (11th), St. Charles West’s Claire Horstmann) and Fatima’s Lauren Berhorst (24th).

Limberg was not the only Four Rivers Conference (FRC) runner in the Class 3 girls race.

St. James senior Vanessa Perona closed her high school cross country career with a 42nd-place time of 21:14.0.

Two additional Highway 19 runners from Cuba also represented the area and Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) in the Class 3 Girls race in Columbia.

Cuba junior Kaylee Fulliam placed 50th in 21:26.0 while Lady Wildcat freshman Cadynce Basham placed 148th in a time of 25:02.7.

Dutchmen junior Felix Guerrero was the lone FRC runner in the Class 3 boys race.

Off to a fast start, Guerrero was sitting in 31st at the 1,000-meter split before falling 20 spots to 51st at the 2,000-meter split.

Sitting in 61st at the 4,000-meter split, Guerrero was able to pick up six spots before crossing the finish line in a 55th-place time of 17:46.7.

“Felix ran a solid race against a very competitive field,” Candrl said. “Now that he has been here, I look for him to do his homework and get on the podium next year.”

Like Limberg, Guerrero came out of a tough district.

Nine runners from the district three meet in Fulton finished in the top 25 of the Class 3 boys race.

Southern Boone’s Connor Burns won an individual state title in a time of 15:01.2 finishing more than a minute ahead Bowling Green’s Matt Chance who posted a second-place time of 16:02.4.

Joining Burns and Chance as All-State runners from district three were St. Charles West’s James Wortham (4th), John Burroughs’ Charles Glatz (5th), Father Tolton’s Quentin Hermann (6th), John Burroughs’ Ted Spetnagel (7th), John Burroughs’ William Shearburn (15th), Father Tolton’s Owen Hartline (18th) and Southern Boone’s Brian Burns (21st).

Father Tolton won the Class 3 Boys Cross Country team championship with a score of 106 points.

John Burroughs also represented district three by capturing the third-place trophy with a team score of 116 points.
