Area high school track teams began their road to Jefferson City with district meets over the weekend and baseball teams will join the May madness over the weekend.
While Owensville and Hermann athletes look to punch their tickets to the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Track and Field Championships during sectional competition in Paris Saturday, the Dutchmen and Bearcat baseball teams will begin play in their respective district tournaments.
Steven Kemp’s third-seeded Owensville Dutchmen will take on the sixth-seeded Cuba Wildcats also on Saturday at 2 p.m., in St. Clair during first-round action of the MSHSAA Class 4, District 4 baseball tournament.
A Dutchmen win would advance them to Monday’s district semifinals against Salem’s Tigers at 6 p.m., in St. Clair.
Wayland McKague’s top-seeded Hermann Bearcats will await the winner of MSHSAA Class 3, District 6 baseball tournament first-round action between Bowling Green and Mark Twain Saturday afternoon at noon at Montgomery County High School. A Saturday win by Hermann would put them in the championship game on Tuesday, May 14 against either Elsberry’s Indians or the host Wildcats at 5:30 p.m.
Zach Bollmann’s Owensville Dutchgirl soccer team will look to shake up the MSHSAA Class 2, District 4 girls soccer tournament field on Monday, May 13, against the host Helias Lady Crusaders in Jefferson City at 6 p.m.
Falling 3-2 in penalty kicks Monday at St. James, Bollmann’s Dutchgirls ended their regular season last night (Tuesday) at Laquey.
Cullen VanLeer’s OHS golf team saw their season extended into next week when Crew Epstein ended a seven-year drought of having a state bound golfer following his 19th-place round of 89 during last Thursday’s MSHSAA Class 3, District 1 Tournament at Crown Pointe Golf Club in Park Hills.
Epstein is the first Dutchmen golf state qualifier since Logan Moritz accomplished the feat back in the spring of 2017.
OMS track ended their season Thursday at the weather-shortened Union Middle School (UMS) Relays.
Those results will appear in next week’s Republican.
In addition to all of the sports happenings over the weekend, yours truly would like to wish all of the mothers out there a Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday.
