Meet the Candidates reveals split among them

Posted

At the Meet the Candidates forum held last Wednesday, the four candidates running for aldermen were present. The event was sponsored by the Gerald Area Chamber of Commerce.

Rudy Via campaigning for the Ward 1 seat and Hayden Schoenfeld, vying for the Ward 2 seat are both seeking their first term in city office.

Responding to questions about the proposed Rock Island Trail expected to come through Gerald, both men spoke enthusiastically about the possibilities the trail would bring to the town. Both pledged to do what they could to support and prepare for the trail.

In contrast, incumbents Steve Grgurich in Ward 1 and Ed Adams in Ward 2, were less enthusiastic. Both expressed doubts as to whether the trail would become a reality. They both also reminded the group that the city had very little money to spend on any project.

Adams did not originally sign up as a candidate to retain his seat. He later formally registered as a write in candidate.

Voters within the city limits will vote for the candidate of their choice next Tuesday, April 5. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the St. Gerald Catholic Church hall, 402 E. Fitzgerald.
