Mule Days fun

The Mid-Missouri Horse, Mule, & Ox Farming & Historical Crafts Days was once again held the first week in October, just north of Gerald.

The event “celebrates animal power, traditional skills and crafts, life before the industrial era and how this knowledge is still valuable and relevant today,” according to organizers.

And it never disappoints, not even after 29 years.

As visitors cross a small creek to walk onto the grounds they are met with smells of wood smoke and walnuts being crushed underfoot. They hear the sounds of music played on traditional instruments as well the snorts and snuffles of the animals on display. They see a wide variety of craftsmen working with their hands. Many of these people sell their wares on site, some are there simply to display their skills. All are there to enjoy a simple autumn weekend spent doing what they love.

While there, you can see flax spun into linen thread, wool spun into yarn and sorghum turned into molasses.

Stone masons build a rock wall, woodsmen demonstrate using a two-man crosscut saw and woodcarvers send wood shavings flying.

The chuck wagon tent provided meals, but other delicacies were available across the grounds. Baked goods, jams and jellies and molasses were all offered for sale.

Draft horses and mules provided demonstrations of plowing and other farm work. Old fashioned equipment of all varieties was on display.

Mule Days is truly an event everyone should experience at least once. How lucky Gerald residents are to have the event practically on their doorstep. Mark your calendar now for the first week in October 2027 and see for yourself.
