Neil William Reed, 77, Owensville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

He was born Sept. 11, 1948, in Ringwood, Victoria, Australia, to Edwin and Gwendolyn (Cudlip) Reed.

From his early years in Australia to the life he eventually built in Missouri, Neil’s journey was one filled with curiosity, adventure, stories, and an appreciation for the world and the people around him.

He proudly served in the Australian Army before finding his calling in journalism. A natural storyteller with a keen interest in people and current events, he spent many years working as a journalist and eventually owned and operated his own newspaper in Australia. His love of writing and keeping informed never left him. He enjoyed following current affairs and could often be found engaged in a conversation about what was happening in the world.

Neil had a curious spirit and a love for discovering new places. He enjoyed traveling, being surrounded by nature, and especially bird watching. He had an appreciation for the simple beauty of the outdoors and the many wonders that could be found by simply slowing down and paying attention. Perhaps most important to Neil, however, was his family.

He was united in marriage to Deborah Mistler on Oct. 31, 1998, in Las Vegas, Nev. Together they shared a life filled with memories, travels, family gatherings, and the everyday moments that become treasured memories. Neil was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was also the kind of person who made room in his heart for others. Beyond his immediate family, there were many children he considered his grandchildren, each holding a special place in his life.

Neil was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Gwendolyn Reed; and siblings, Ashley and Keith Reed.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Deborah of their home; daughter, Lindsey Shanor and husband Ronnie of Owensville; grandson, Jacob Shanor and significant other Mariah Kirby of Owensville; great-grandsons, Xander Sample and Finley Shanor; siblings, Paul Reed and wife Catherine “Kate” and Rose Marie Reed, all of Melbourne, Australia; along with brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, friends, and the many children and loved ones who became part of his extended family.

Those who knew Neil will remember a man whose life stretched across continents, careers, and generations. He brought with him the perspective of someone who had seen much of the world, yet he found meaning in the people closest to him, the beauty of nature, a good conversation, and the stories that connected us all.

Neil’s life began in Australia, but over the years, Missouri became home. The legacy he leaves behind is not measured only in the places he traveled or the work he accomplished, but in the family he loved, the friendships he made, the lives he touched, and the memories that will continue to be shared.

His body was cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. at his home 3598 Willow Lake Vale in Owensville where family and friends will gather to remember his life, share stories, and celebrate the man he was and the love he gave to those around him.

Though Neil’s journey has come to an end, the stories, memories, and love he leaves behind will continue on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Arrangements entrusted to Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville.
