ST. CLAIR — Aside from a few passing showers and sprinkles, a Ninth District American Legion baseball doubleheader was played Friday night at St. Clair High School’s turf field between visiting New Haven Post 366 and the hosts from St. Clair Post 347.

Seeing their 14U counterparts fall 4-3 in game one of the night, New Haven Post 366’s 15U squad led 5-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning before St. Clair scored six unanswered runs to take the night cap of the doubleheader 6-5 on a night where weather forecasters missed the mark on potentially severe weather.

With the vast majority of both New Haven squads from Hermann, them playing in green uniforms would have thrown off the average baseball fan considering New Haven’s school colors are green and white.

John Puff started game two with a leadoff single before Caleb Lottmann started a two-out rally with a hit-by pitch.

That started a string of four consecutive New Haven batters being hit by a pitch.

Also taking one for the team in the top of the first inning for New Haven was Caden Detterman, Wyatt Meyer and Parker Thurman.

Puff and Lottmann both scored when Meyer and Thurman were hit by pitches with the bases loaded. Eli Kohlbusch capped the four-run top of the first inning for New Haven with a two-out, two-RBI single that plated Detterman and Meyer.

New Haven’s next base runner did not come until the top of the fourth inning when Thurman was hit by a pitch for the second time in as many plate appearances.

Ayden Keen also drew a two-out walk in the frame from New Haven Post 366.

Owen Yochim scored New Haven’s final run of the game when he reached on an error with one out in the top of the fifth inning before scoring on a subsequent error.

Lottmann and Meyer were both hit by pitches later in the inning but were left stranded after the third out was recorded on the base paths.

Game one saw St. Clair Post 347 lead 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before ending it on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning.

New Haven tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning when Cody Meyer singled and scored on a RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Evan Presti.

Korbyn Kottwitz reached on an error to lead off the top of the fourth inning before being retired as part of a 6-3 double play.

Reid Steiner walked, stole second and advanced to third base on a ground out in the top of the fifth inning before he ended up being stranded there following an inning-ending strikeout.

Trailing 2-1 after five innings, New Haven tied the game at 2-2 when Brayden Hoener doubled and later scored on a Caleb Pohlmann RBI single.

Emmerson Binkholder singled with two outs moving the potential go-ahead run to third base before the frame ended on a ground out.

Down to their final three outs trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning, New Haven pushed the tying run across extending the game to the bottom of the seventh.

Charlie Groppe walked and scored on an error tying the game at 3-3 before Lane Groner walked and Presti was hit by a pitch keeping the two-out rally alive.

Roberts was then retired trying to score the go-ahead running sending the game to the bottom of the seventh inning tied at 3-3.

New Haven’s next action will be on Thursday, July 2 in a showdown of both the 14U and 15U squads at 6 p.m., at New Haven.
