New name, little difference expected as Village Market changes ownership

HERMANN — Village Market shoppers should see little difference resulting from the change of ownership after the first of the year, says longtime community grocer Tim Hubbard.

G&W Cash Savers of Owensville will assume ownership of Village Market on Jan. 2. Dec. 31 will be the last day of operations under Hubbard’s ownership. An inventory of the store will be done on Jan. 1, he added.

The store will be closed for about a week, Hubbard told the Gasconade County Republican, to allow the new owners to make some changes to the interior of the grocery store.

There might be an addition to the store’s name, Hubbard said. “I know they’re going to keep ‘Village Market,’ he said, adding that ‘Cash Savers’ might become part of the store’s name. G&W will continue to carry the familiar brands distributed by Associated Wholesale Grocers, such as Best Choice.

“They’re not going to see a huge change,” Hubbard said of the store’s customers.

A grocer in Hermann for the past 28 years, Hubbard said he had an opportunity to ease out of the grocery business after 48 years.

“I had an opportunity and I took it,” he said. “It’s time to go,” added Hubbard, who will celebrate his 61st birthday in February. However, he said, he’ll still be around for a while.
