Opening the Owensville Dutchgirl Soccer Tournament last Wednesday at Owensville High School’s Dutchmen Field, Kim McGee’s Dutchgirls took on Liberty’s (Mountain View) Lady Eagles in the opening game of the tournament.
Scoreless throughout most of the first half, Cheyenne Nixon broke the scoreless tie with a goal at the 25:25 mark of the opening half giving Owensville a 1-0 lead.
With Owensville nursing a 1-0 halftime lead, scoring picked up during the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Liberty (Mountain View) tied the match at 1-1 with 33:58 left in regulation before Nixon answered with her second goal of the game just over a minute later.
Now leading 2-1 with 32:54 remaining, Owensville spent the rest of the second half looking for that extra insurance goal.
Right after public address announcer Barb Loyd said there was one minute remaining, Nixon completed a Dutchgirl hat trick scoring her third goal of the game putting Owensville up 3-1 with 55.0 remaining.
Going on to win the match by that 3-1 score, Owensville dropped their remaining two tournament matches by scores of 4-1 last Thursday against St. James and 6-0 against eventual tournament champion Sullivan last Friday.
Keeping the Liberty’s Eagles on defense most of the game, Grube stopped four shots while allowing just the one goal.
Nixon scored the lone goal against St. James while Riley Grube recorded 16 saves in goal.
Grube also had 16 saves in the loss against Sullivan.
After hosting Capital City’s Lady Cavaliers out of Jefferson City Monday night, Owensville went on the road last night (Tuesday) for a Four Rivers Conference (FRC) match against St. Clair before another road test today (Wednesday) in Fulton.
Owensville will conclude their regular season on Monday, May 11 on the road at St. James for their third meeting against the Lady Tigers this season.
