Owensville High School (OHS) head girls soccer coach Kim McGee might want to do her best to remember what she told her players last Friday night during halftime of their season opener at Dutchmen Field against Fatima’s Lady Comets.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Owensville found the back of the net eight times out of 10 shots on goal in the second half during their 8-1 season-opening victory over Fatima’s Lady Comets.
“I’m proud of our girls for overcoming a scoreless first half and scoring eight goals in the second half to open our season with a win,” McGee said.
Just before the midway point of the first half, Fatima’s Casey Kleffner beat Dutchgirl goal keeper Riley Grube giving the visiting Lady Comets a 1-0 lead at the 23:15 mark of the first half.
From that point on, it was all Dutchgirls as Grube did not face another shot on goal for the remaining 56 minutes and change of the match.
Cheyenne Nixon knotted the match up at 1-1 on a goal with 39:28 for the match before giving the Dutchgirls a 2-1 lead with her second goal of the night at the 27:25 mark of the second half.
Brooke Jahnsen joined the Dutchgirl goal-scoring frenzy with her first goal of the night bumping Owensville’s lead to 3-1 with 24:17 for the match.
After a Fatima foul in the penalty area, Nixon earned a shot at a hat trick with 20:16 for the match.
Firing a shot past Fatima keeper Caroline Nuebert, Nixon completed her hat trick giving the orange and black a 4-1 lead.
Nearly 10 minutes later, Jahnsen moved one goal closer to a hat trick with her second score of the night at the 10:48 mark of the second half making it 5-1 Dutchgirls.
Already with one hat trick under her belt, Nixon began her quest for another by scoring her fourth goal of the game with 7:15 remaining.
Almost a minute later, Nixon made it five goals on the night pushing Owensville’s lead to 7-1 with 6:30 remaining.
Jahnsen joined Nixon in the hat trick department with 1:55 left in the match scoring her third goal on the night helping the Dutchgirls secure their final margin of victory.
Owensville will return to action tomorrow (Thursday) night on the road in Union opening the Four Rivers Conference (FRC) portion of their season against the host Lady Wildcats with a 5 p.m., kickoff.
